DBB shoe size question

Hi all,

Well (and Mommy - heehee) survived the 2nd tenotomy and we

are set to have this cast removed on September 13th (24 days). When

Dr Herzenberg came to me from the OR with his " report " , he siad he

got the results from her foot that he wanted and that she would go

back to the DBB when the casts come off. Since he had been out of

the country, we saw his partner, Dr. Standard, for the past two

appointments. We were not sent to have 's feet measured

inbetween any casts so Dr. H said to have both of her shoes sized

with her right (non-clubbed) foot. This is very concerning to me as

there is a tremendous size difference between her feet. Her CF

bigtoe only comes to the bottom of her right bigtoe when here feet

are placed sole to sole. Her first pair of DBB shoes were different

sizes and we never had any problems with sores, slipping off, etc.

I am very concerned that the left shoe will be too big and cause

problems. Any suggestions? This is the first time I have been

concerened with anything Dr H has said.

Marilouise,

I bet Dr. H. didn't notice or forgot her feet are so different in size

during the procedure. I would imagine if you reminded him of this, he'd

say differently. Sometimes, even the best Dr's are confused which patient

they're seeing or talking about or whatever (remembering something like

this) and need to be reminded. They do see many patients each day and if

they're specializing in something like this all the patients can get massed

together a blur of little feet lol... not that it's acceptable for a Dr to

be a flake remembering things - but it happens. I remember my RE who is

fantastic, up on the latest technology, cares about his patients and

everyone likes him, blah, blah, blah... But darn if he wasn't a little

goofy when it came to remembering which patient was who and what her

treatment was specifically when not looking at the chart right then and

there. He used to take a picture of each patient with a Polaroid and stick

it in her chart. So funny, because he even forgot he took a picture of me

a few years later. I told him he did, and then he told me he just started

doing it. What a forgetful guy! lol, I totally remember him taking my

picture. (we were not in a clinical setting at the time - he didn't have

my chart to reference).

What size was her shoe (for the CF) last time? Was it getting too small or

just right when you first saw Dr. H? If it was just right - you still have

that old shoe right? Worst case, you can use that shoe for a while till

they get the right size. If it was starting to get small, that was like 5

weeks ago right? It might be on the too small side when she gets the

tenotomy cast off. So all you need to do is call the brace shop and make

sure they have shoes in two half sizes larger than the one you've got

available for on the 13th. Personally I'm all for whole sizes

larger when we get new shoes - I've not had good luck with half sizes

because she grows so fast. So a half size larger or one whole size should

be about right for her I would imagine. As long as they're available at

the time (meaning they don't have to order them), you shouldn't have a

problem.

LOL, at our last check up our dr. said Zoe had great flexibility in

her foot, he was very impressed (with himself, no doubt), only he was

checking on her left foot, instead of her right. Turns out her left

foot over dorsiflexes (womb position??) and I think he thought he did

a crazy tenotomy.

Hi Kori,

I mentioned to Dr H right then about her CF being so much smaller

and he just said the same thing again -- measure with the good

foot. Didn't think about her old shoes! Her right one (non CF),

her toes were hanging over the edge but the CF shoe her toes weren't

even to the tip of it yet. So probably the next whole size would be

best as I am sure she has grown and plus her foot is a bit

straighter now that the medial crease has improved. The place I get

her shoes from was great the first time. has only had one

pair of shoes so far.

Thanks!!

They always check Darbs non CF foot as well, and at least 2 times when she

was very little the comment came that her non CF foot was nicely corrected

lol. Each time they start manipulating her left foot all interested in

it's dorsiflexion etc. I remind them she's unilateral right. I don't know

if they just don't look at the chart, or if they're comparing or confused

or what...

I don't know either, but can tell you I was very pleased when Zoe had

her tenotomy and they sent someone in specifically to mark

her " procedure " foot. Prevented me from having to take out the

marker I had brought on my own. LOL. No kidding.
