I have total mid-range deafness in both ears caused by too many years of loud, sharp noises without adequate hearing protection. One side effect is that I am constantly being told to lower my voice. I haven't got a clue that my " volume " has increased. The other side effect is that I generally don't hear any of the " spousal irritant " noises like a screech on the TV, crinkling cellophane, mid-range hums, buzzes or whatever. We had been married for about three years before we discovered that there was a medical reason for it and that it wasn't from me just being an insensitive jerk. She still gets just as irritated, but at least she has stopped yelling at me and no longer uses my floating ribs for jabbing practice with the point of her elbow. She will not, however, let me get away with " sorry, I didn't I hear that " when she is asking me to do something I don't want to do, like shovel the driveway or take the garbage out. Guest guest
My kids and husband think I'm going deaf. I am constantly asking them to repeat themselves. It drives them crazy. But, what drives me crazy is those irritating noises. Just like you mentioned. The sound of things like wrappers on food - I make my kids put chips in a bowl cause I can't stand the noise of the wrapper. The sound of people eating (that's a BAD one), some people's voices. It just irritates me so much, I can't stand it. It's like those kind of noises are amplified. I also have a thing with the volume on the tv. Sometimes it's way too loud for me (everyone else thinks I'm crazy) then other times it's way too quiet. It's so weird. I have a constant ringing in my ears. I've had my hearing checked before, and It's always been normal. It's been a few years since I had it checked, though. Mike and I talked about this. I actually went to a movie theater a few weeks ago. I haven't been in years cause I can't sit that long. But, I was feeling pretty good after Mike worked on me, and wanted to see LOR so badly,. so I went. I told Mike I hoped I could get through it. Not because of my back, but because of the eating and food wrapper noises! (The sound of someone typing on the computer drives me nuts, but only when someone else is typing - have to shut the door on them) Very weird. The sound of things like wrappers on food - I make my kids put chips in a bowl cause I can't stand the noise of the wrapper. { woohoo- I am not the only one- LOL- people chewing, the hand going in and out of the potatoe chip or popcorn bag- and like yourself- it does seem those noises are amplified, more at evening for me than during the day - and I hate to say STOP to them all because I know its just something to do with me } I also have a thing with the volume on the tv. Sometimes it's way too loud for me (everyone else thinks I'm crazy) then other times it's way too quiet. { Same here as well- I myself never have the t.v. going but the kids do- and at times I just want to crawl into a cupboard to get away from the noise, they say it isn't loud- well it is to me lol } I have a constant ringing in my ears. I've had my hearing checked before, and It's always been normal. It's been a few years since I had it checked, though. { I think my hearing is too good- so do my kids when they whisper and I state what they said hahahaha- Instead of eyes in the back of my head they have to be careful about whispers because Mom will most often hear them } (The typing does drive me nuts too- but even my own typing after a while gets to me......) (The sound of someone typing on the computer drives me nuts, but only when someone else is typing - have to shut the door on them) { It's good to know I am not alone- I thought I was becoming irritable-from being housebound and not able to do much- perhaps it still is, all I know is, geesh- I need some peace and quiet- more so from 7 p.m. to mornig! }
