Guest guest
Hi there, is almost ready to go into his shoes. He has had his tenotomy, and will have his casts off around the 2 September. We were given a prescription for his shoes, and took it to an orthotist here in NJ. They gave us the shoes straight away. However, I am concerned that they are not correct. First of all, the doc told us we need a 9 inch bar. We were given an 8 inch one, because apparantly there is no 9 inch available, and were told the 10 inch would be too big. Secondly, everything I have read about the shoes mentions a strap and buckle. These shoes do not have anything like that, only laces. Is something wrong, or am I misunderstanding what the shoes should be like? and 6/24/04 bc
Guest guest
, No, you're not " missing " anything. You can find all the information about the brace in the files section on the website here under the bracing folder. You can also find some of the same information and pictures on the ponseti_links site (http://pages.ivillage.com/ponseti_links) in the bracing section. Good luck getting 's brace figured out, and *CONGRATS* on getting out of the casting stage! Guest guest
, Evan's first shoes did not have a strap/buckle either and it worked just fine. Just make sure you do them up tight! His next set did have the strap and it seemed more necessary then because he was older and stronger and would have been able to get them off much more easily. Regarding the length of the bar, it is my understanding that the shoulders are supposed to fit in between the heels of the shoes when they are mounted on the bar and that longer is better than shorter. Several people have reported that their babies are much more comfortable and settle down easier when they have changed to a longer bar. For the record, Evan had no trouble at all with the brace--no blisters, no screaming, no coming out of it etc. so remember that it is possible to have a trouble-free time of it. I hope you have the same good luck we did!!! and Evan (8-17-00, bcf-correction complete, femoral torsion- current problem) > Hi there, > > is almost ready to go into his shoes. Guest guest
, Thanks for the encouragement. I am so nervous about going into the brace, because all I've read has been negative. I guess only people experiencing problems write in, so it was so refreshing to hear your side of things! and 6/24 bc shelleylapp dslapp@...> wrote: , Evan's first shoes did not have a strap/buckle either and it worked just fine. Guest guest
Hi , I think you're right and mainly people that are having problems with the shoes are writing in. So I thought I'd tell you about our good experience as well. I was actually quite excited about the DBB, I thought they looked quite cute, and definitely made nappy changing easier... Anyway, when Alister went into the DBB he cried on and off for the first 4 hours but from then on he was fine and we never had any problems with it. At first we took the shoes off for 1 hour a day but then we found that he was happier if we didn't take them off at all, well almost not at all, just long enough to give him a bath and change his socks. So basically he wore them 24/7 for the first 3 months, then 18 hours until he could walk, then 15 hours until recently when we went down to 12 hours (he's almost 2 years old now). When we went down from 24 hours to 18 hours we expected him to cry when we put the shoes back on after having 'free feet' for a while but he didn't mind at all. He still doesn't mind me putting the shoes on him at night but he does like it when I take them off in the morning. Anway, I hope it will all go smoothly for you as well, at least you know that it is totally possible. All the best, with and Alister (RCF, *11 Sep 02) --- Kearns linda07033@...> wrote: > , > > Thanks for the encouragement. Guest guest
, I don't know about all babies, but Rose was fitted for her shoes the day she had her tenotony. The ortho guy came up to the Dr.'s office and put the shoe on her " unclub " foot and showed us how to seat it, how tight to tie it, ect. We took the shoes home with us that day. We live in Alaska so we couldn't go to the Dr.'s office to put the shoes on, so we did it ourselves. Robin & Rose 3/12/03 Right club foot susan.shook@... wrote: Hello . You should not get s shoes until he is out of the casts. The shoes come in many sizes, how do you know you have the right size? After the casts come off take him with you to get fitted in the shoes. I hope they are returnable just in case. What size are the shoes you have? My daughters 1st shoe was size 000 which did not have a strap either. When we moved up to 00 they had a strap. I wonder if it was because they were so small. I'm not sure on that. Please find out if the shoes are exchangable, you may need to. Nothing is worse then shoes that don't fit right which you will learn when reading this site. Good luck and let us know the outcome. Guest guest
Hm, the orthotic expert met with us at Everett's casting appointment, making measurements of his feet, etc., then on the day of the tenotomy, he met us there to deliver the shoes/bar. This was at Dr. Ponseti's clinic in Iowa. s. Re: HELP -- new to shoes and DBB Hello . You should not get s shoes until he is out of the casts.
