Guest guest Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 Tough to say. I have been doing my own dietary experiments lately (I have been GF for about a year and a half) and I have not noticed a reaction even after consuming copious amounts of gluten (beer, flour tortillas, sandwich from Chili's, soft tacos from Taco Bell, etc. all over a 3 day period). However, the last time I had a reaction was right after consuming P.F. Chang's Gluten Free Chang's Spicy Chicken. Go figure.. --E Dah!!!...and now am I paying? I can't believe it!!!! Stupid mistake. I ate two handfuls Doritos Nacho cheese flavor without reading the ingredients on Sunday evening.. Because I've been eating Doritos for the last couple weeks (for some reason they've been sounding good with I cold soda), I thought I knew they were gf. The next day my son tells me the allergan warning says they contain wheat. My fault for assuming they were okay, just because the spicy ones are. Anyway, I felt fine regardless, and okay yesterday. But today I fell worn out and even weak. Do you think there's any connection? This is the first time I've had any gluten since January. Guest guest Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 Were you diagnosed with Celiac? Because if so you are doing damage, even if you are not noticably reacting- your antibodies are undoubtedly up at the very least, and villi are probably noticing, even if you aren't. I understand that many Celiacs don't have noticable gut reactions at all- but that doesn't mean that they aren't hurting themselves when they consume gluten. Put... the flour taco... Down...and nobody will get hurt. I've known guys diagnosed with celiac who did experiments because they couldn't live without beer, whatever, and while they might have been young and reasonably resilient, they were clearly not healthy, and their condition wasn't going to improve with age. Why experiment with your health? If you have had a gluten intolerance/allergy in the past (but NOT celiac), but seem to have overcome it, yippee! Time for a gluten party. > > Tough to say. Guest guest Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 Yep, bloodwork and 2 endoscopies. I can't wait for a third endoscopy to see what's going on down there. If this one comes up clean like the last one you "breathing one microscopic gluten containing dog food molecule whilst feeding Fido" types will have a lot of explaining to do. --E Re: Dah!!!...and now am I paying? Guest guest Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 For the record, my cats eat a fully gluten diet daily, and enjoy Barley cat on their food. I try to avoid licking their bowl, but that's about it. (Ok, ok, i wash my hands, but have you smelled that stuff? Don't need to have Eu de Pet Promise, thanks) So enough with the " you types " - it's not really extreme to suggest that if you have celiac, you might want to avoid eating, oh, i dunno, WHEAT. Re: endoscopy, if you haven't been cheating that frequently, they may not see a visible change. Celiac is often misdiagnosed. But I think if your big test is- is there a crater the size of the grand canyon in my intestines, then you may not find it. And those antibody tests are not the perfect guage anyway. It sucks, but they aren't. However, damage is still being done whether our current tests are clever enough to detect it anyway- IF you have Celiac. Did you have the gene test? It seems to me that it would rule out at least some of the doubt involved. I never had any doubt, because I turn into a spewing beast if I eat gluten, and whadaya know, I have the gene twice over. Also- I've had two endoscopies, in my whole life- was the first one inconclusive, or did you have doubt in their abilities to read them? (perfectly valid question) Dunno why I'm bothering to type all this, except I have a Japanese exam in an hour that I'm trying to avoid, so I'll just pull the plug here. Enjoy your fries, whatever. > > Yep, bloodwork and 2 endoscopies. I can't wait for a third endoscopy to see what's going on down there. Guest guest Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 LOL.. Thanks for the reply...it was...entertaining. Anyway, I have questioned my diagnosis for some time since I get really weird reactions that don't seem to be related to gluten (big D usually). I will be happily gluten freeing along and then whammo - reaction. However, sometimes when I accidentally ingest gluten (or on purpose in my latest masochistic gluten binge) I see no reaction. I am beginning to think I have either been misdiagnosed or there are other allergies present that have not been diagnosed yet. What would you recommend? See another gastro? Get an enterolab or something? I'm all ears! I am more curious at this point than I am concerned since my villi were in great shape last time around and my reactions aren't that dramatic. Now go study, seamaiden399san. --E Re: Dah!!!...and now am I paying? For the record, my cats eat a fully gluten diet daily, and enjoy Barley cat on their food. Guest guest Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 So, I'm curious, what are you really up to with this little experiment? It might give you info on how your own body reacts at this point in time, but I don't think you can extrapolate that to, say, 10 or 20 years from now much less to apply the results to anyone else. I'm pretty sure we'd need a slightly bigger study group for that. Sue in Denver > > Yep, bloodwork and 2 endoscopies. I can't wait for a third endoscopy to see what's going on down there.
