My daughter (we are very new to this diet) loved salads. They used to be a huge

part of her diet. Now, we are confused on the dressings. Her favorite was

Kraft Catalina free but it uses vinegar. She is upset because she really

doesn't like anything else but italian and that of course has vinegar.

I am at a loss.

White vinegar is perfectly fine.

That said, homemade dressing is far superior to the over processed

stuff you buy at the store.

I like mixing olive oil, balsamic, prepared mustard (or powder),

thyme, and cracked red pepper to make a lovely vinaigrette.

Only malt vinegar is off limits, and some " flavored " varieties are

also NOT GF. I'm pretty sure Kraft Catalina is OK. We use

the " free " version and it is GF. Kraft labels well - you don't have

to worry about them hiding the gluten.

Hi Zanna,

Distilled white vinegar used to be on the no-no list. Then they decided that Heinz brand was gluten free. Then the information was that because the vinegar is distilled, all gluten is left behind. The only vinegars that we have to worry about now are the malt vinegars, and vinegars that have things added in after the distillation process. My 15 year celiac daughter loves Kraft Catalina and eats it often.

Heinz is made from corn, anyhow, so it never should have been a

concern. :P

Hi everyone -

I use Wishbone dressings, have never had a problem.

Any vinegar is fine for us except for Malt Vinegar,

which can be (probably is) made from barley malt, and

also is not distilled. So avoid malt vinegar, but

don't worry about other vinegars.

Kraft is very good about labelling, so if they don't

mention wheat on the label their product is

wheat-free. Of course, you still have to think about

barley, rye and oats, but in salad dressing? Not

likely.

There are lots of g-f slad dressings, too. Annie's,

Newman's Own, Trader Joe's, Litehouse, etc. If you

are unsure, call the manufacturer.

Happy sald eating!

I am almost positive Kraft Catalina is okay. On that note, any of

Kraft's dressings that are not gf will be clearly labeled in

parenthesis. Your daughter can still enjoy her favorite dressing!
