I'm not going to be of much help here, but early on when Zach first

started to wear the DBB we noticed one of his big toe - nails was

really red and " angry " looking as you described. When I brought

this to the ped's attention, she said it's just irritated, but not

ingrown. Still, if I were you, I would bring it up to the ped, just

to be on the safe side. Those suckers can be PAINFUL! I do know

though, that I've heard of lots of toenail issues with clubfoot kids

wearing the DBB, but not necessarily ingrown toenails, but ones that

look like they are growing toward the skin somewhat - I don't think

I " ve made the most sense here, but maybe somebody else can offer

some better advice.

Hi Pam,

Just a tidbit of info -- if jared does have an ingrown nail, there is

an over the counter " ointment " you can put on it to make it go away :)

I can't remember the name of it, sorry. Look near foot care products

in the drug store!

Hi,

I'm afraid that my son (10 months, BL clubfeet, AFO 16hrs) will also

develop ingrown toenails. Both of his big toes look as if they are

calloused on the outside. His toenails on his big toes look kinda

strange anyway, like the top is folding toward his body. Our doctor

said that his toes are just really fat and he didn't see a problem.

We were putting bandaids where the callouses are, but he seems to be

allergic to every kind we've tried and his skin breaks out wherever

the bandaid touches (even the non-latex kind). I'm just waiting for

them to crack open and then we'll have a real problem. I've just

been trying to make sure the tongues of his shoes are around his big

toe on the side whenever I tie them. He has another apptmt in Sept,

and I'm gonna ask about it again.

Thanks I will look for this. It is definitely an ingrown nail. It's

now got a little red knot out to the side and its turning white

looking (pus) up next to the nail.

Hello,' my son has ingrown nail in his big toe. We took him to a

kid's dermatologist and he said that we need to cut the nail only

when it's really out in a straight way- not curve-round. This way it

wouldn't be so bad. Always leave the nail outside a bit. I do put,

from time to time, Weleda's Calendula moisturizing cream to soften

the skin and it also ends the redness. I know the treatment is not

nice- inserting a wire… so we'r trying to avoid it.

I'm just catching up on all my posts. It did end up being ingrown I

think. It ended up getting kind of yellow looking with a big red

bump on one side. He's dealt real well with it. He seems to have

such a high pain tolerance. We've been soaking it and I've been

putting neosporin on it. It seems to be running it's course.

It sounds like he might be allergic to the adhesive.

Hi

Our son is now 15 months and in the FAB for 12/14 hours. His toes started

growing upwards ages ago. I have difficulty cutting his toes nails but just

cut them as straight as I can. They are more over to one side and back so

one side of the nail looks like it is growing into the skin. Sometime he has

little lumps around the pointed nail bit but so far nothing has come of it.

I have questions various doctors and our Specialist who said they had never

seen anything like it - great a thought so we have just accepted it and don

t know if it is the shoes that have caused it or not. They were definately

not like it when he was born. Our Physio told us to cut both side of the

shoe at the ends just in case there is some pressure there as he does have

wide feet but we have not done that yet.

He has the strangest most difficult liitle toenails. The grow up

just a little bit and then straight back into his toe across the

top. I would attribute this to clubfoot, but his older brother's

toenails do the same thing. But he never has had an ingrown one like

this.
