Guest guest
Hi, The appointment with Dr. Herzenberg went really well today! (except for the 2 hour wait to see him - LOL) 's foot looked SOOOO good! It has honestly NEVER looked the way it did today when her cast came off The medial crease she has was virtually gone!! More of a line on her foot than a crease now -- it was amazing, I almost cried! And Dr. H could turn her foot outward more than it has ever been able to. was terrified of the cast saw. Dr. H put on a semi-rigid cast this time -- it peels off. Has anyone else had this type of cast? He mentioned Dr. Mosca (is that right???) uses that type. I am a little worried that it won't have as much of an impact as the plaster & fiberglass?? Oh, Dr. H disagreed with Dr. Ponseti's diagnosis of atypical clubfoot! He said that her foot is not that stiff and does not fit the criteria of an atypical cf. He said he was VERY encouraged by what he saw today. will ahve a few more casts and her tenotomy will be in mid-August. I asked him about how they would do it this time since is older. He said I had my choice of in the operating room or in the pediatric ICU. Does anyone have any advice/opinion on eiher of those. I didn't ask details since it's still a bit away and he was obviously very busy today. Thanks!! Guest guest
We always managed to bathe the baby in the sink at the dr's office between casts.....I'd take a little bottle of soap... just an idea. s. Re: 's foot looks so good!! Marilouise, My son (treated in Dr. Mosca's clinic) had the soft casts all the way through his treatment and it was highly successful. I think they use them all the time there on all the cf kids. They are GREAT!!! Being able to remove them at home and take a REAL bath on the day of the appointment is absolutely a wonderful thing and treatment is not compromised at all. Glad to read of such a happy day for your daughter!! 8) and Evan 8-17-00 bcf
Guest guest
My son (BL clubfeet, exactly the same age as your daughter--same day and everything) had his first tenotomies done in the doctor's office and they didn't heal well. Our doctor said it was because he was moving around and kicking so much that the casts put on after the surgery were holding him in the wrong position. His second set of tenotomies were done in the hospital and we had very good luck with those. I was terrified of his going under, but it seemed to work better with him not kicking and screaming. He's now crawling and pulling up on everything (even with his afo--he wears it 16 hrs./day). Good luck with everything! Callie

Guest guest
The casts will work great. Dr Mosca uses them exclusively for clubfoot and they definitely get the job done! Not only that, but they hold up 1000 times better than plaster or hard fiberglass do to wear and tear. Kai walked on knee casts for 2 weeks each without wearing thru more than the first layer, and that included walking on concrete. I wonder if the misdiagnosis by Dr Ponseti was due to him thinking she had been correctly casted to begin with? That seems possible. Although you might mention to Dr H that not all atypical clubfeet are very stiff and difficult to manipulate. Kai has the most relapsing case of plantaris I have heard of, but his foot is very easily manipulated/corrected. Dr Mosca originally only had to do 3 manipulative casts followed by tenotomy to correct his foot, but it got screwy in the tenotomy cast. Still it is great to hear that lacks the criteria of atypical cf. That has got to be a huge relief to you! And I so know what you mean about almost crying when you see the cast come off. That is how it was for me when Dr Ponseti's first cast came off. It was like he had made a whole new foot inside that cast! Cheering you and on! Angel 's foot looks so good!! Guest guest
Hi Callie, Thanks for the experience tidbit! The kicking and screaming part is what worries me. Next appointment I am going to ask details on the choices Dr. Herzenberg gave me... Guest guest
Hi , Thanks! Dr. H didn't say anything about being able to take the cast off at home for a bath...I'll have to ask. Maybe if the cast is only off for the bath and the drive to the appointment...hmmmm. When the first cast came off yesterday in the office, I was even given time to wash down her leg and foot before they started the new cast! Kinda upset me since I could smell that yucky cast smell on . I'll have to be more pushy next week Marilouise and 9/9/03, LCF, cast #2/2nd series > Marilouise, > > My son (treated in Dr. Mosca's clinic) had the soft casts all the way > through his treatment and it was highly successful. Guest guest
Hi Angel, Thanks for the happy words once again!! I think maybe the disgeement in diagnosis is likely to be from Dr. P only seing pictures where Dr. H has seen and felt 's foot. You have a good point about how Dr. P may have thought this was a relapse...I was not very detailed in my email to him. Tried to be short and to the point, more details would probably have been good.
