Guest guest
Hi Sandy, My grandson Andrez also developed a very bad blister and was out of his shoes for 12 days. We took him back to his doctor who re-casted him for 3 weeks because he lost some of his correction. I've read that most babies are casted while their blisters are healing but our doctor did not suggest that - if he had Andrez would not have had to go back in the casts. Well to make matters worse, when my daughter took Andrez back to have his casts removed and hoping to have him back in his shoes, his x-rays showed his hips were setting right so now he has to wear a harness and short cast for 3 months! We are hoping after the 3 months we will be through with the casts. Best of luck to little Lola! Andrez BCF 2-13-04 > Hi Everyone, > > Sandy and Lola here. Guest guest
Sandy, DO I read correctly that Lola was out of shoes but not in cast while healing? If that is the case the the problem is most likely that she lost correction while healing and now the shoes really hurt. Especially if she never acted that way before with the shoes. Not knowing the geography of Australia, I dont know if any of the other Ponseti doctors are near you; but I suggest that if she was out of shoes for so long then she really needs another cast - even if the doc isnt certain that correction was lost - and if Dr Patel is not willing to do that for her there are other doctors you can contact. Angel Getting over Blisters! Hi Everyone, Sandy and Lola here. Lola is having a really tough time getting back use to her Bar and Shoes... She had a really badly infected blister which she had to go on antibiotics for - anyway - we got over that phase - I have started to reintroduce the boots - her scab had fallen off her blister - but there was still a tiny little one - but I went in to see my Orthodist - Dr Patel - and he said they looked fine and I should continue on with putting the shoes on. Anyway - I have been trying to put them on for a few more hours each day - however today - she has just screamed and screamed all day - which is so unlike her - so I had another look at her feet and the sore foot is a bit red but there now seems to be a lump there? Almost like a bone or a callus? Has anybody else had this happen to them? I am at my wits end as I just want to get them back on and happening - Dr Patel has assured me that her feet are very well corrected and not to be too concerned about them relapsing - but it does concern me as she has not had them on full time now for 3 weeks! We are having a long weekend this weekend in Australia - so I will have to wait until Tuesday to call Dr Patel and try to get in to see him... if anybody else out there has gone through this would greatly appreciate any suggestions on how you got over it? Maybe I put the shoes back on too early? Looking forward to hearing back from anyone! Thanks Sandy and Lola Moderate Bilateral club foot. 02-12-
Guest guest
My daughter had a similar problem recently. She got a sore, healing cast, shoes back on and then the sore came back. The doc said she didn't need a cast this time but to leave the shoes off. Did that, shoes back on, sore came back. Cut hole in shoe and saw that her heel was not staying flat like it was supposed to. To get her heel to stay flat the shoes had to be so tight that she started to get a sore on the top of her foot from the strap. So, we went back to the doctor. He recommended a custom made AFO. She got fitted for the AFO on Friday and we are going to pick it up on Tues. I questioned him on the efficacy of the AFO vs. DBB. He said the results are the same as well as the rate of relapse. He also said that DBB's less costly and that is why they are the first choice of treatment. (an AFO costs $650.00 each time you get one) I researched what he said on the web and found a group that studied babies with DBB vs. AFO's and they found no difference in the level of correction or rate of relapse. I completely believe in Dr. Ponseti but the DBB did not work for us. Maybe when Kaitlin's foot grows we will try again. Also the AFO will not have to involve her right foot- which is the foot that keeps getting the sores. Guest guest
> Hi everyone, Thanks for all your suggestions regarding Lola's blisters and getting back into the shoes. We have tried again this morning as I took her shoes off the other day and her heel was still red and sore and with a small bump - looked like a calcium build up. Anyway - we have them on at the moment and she has slept for the last hour - that's hopeful! Hoping we are back on track. Will speak to Dr Patel at our next appointment re: correct fitting, re-casting?, cutting window in back of shoe.... thanks again everyone. Will keep you all posted. > > Sandy and Lola > > Moderate Bilateral club foot. 02-12-
Guest guest
Hi , I think we have finally gotten back on track - geez - what a long ordeal that all was! Lola has had her shoes on now successfully - with sleep for the last 48 hours! Even when I put them back on after her one hour she is not crying - maybe a bit of a whinge but I tend to prop her in front of the tele and that distracts her enough for me to get them back on. Blister has completely healed and looks beautiful! I have bought these nifty little things called Blister Blocks - they are a bandaid - but more like a cushion or second skin you put on and it forms to your foot... they are ideal - if anybody out there needs something to offer a bit of relief after a blister for their little ones look out for them - they are not bulky like a bandaid so easy to slip the shoes on and off over! She has now gotten use to pulling her legs up in unison and kicking them up in the air. A friend of mine has made some fleece " skirts " - basically they are like a sleeping bag but only come up to the waist - so I put her in a grow suit (feet cut out) and pop the skirt on top - they just have an elastic waist band. She seems to love this as she can still freely move about - great little invention... if anybody out there needs help in their little ones sleeping this one worked for us! If I don't put it on her - she wakes up every 15 mins.... I will try to organise a photo of her in it and send it on the board so eveyone can have a look. I will let you know how we go at our next appointment - which is 1st July! Thanks for everything - especially for getting me in touch with this great board!
