He had his casts put on at 10 days old and has had then changed weekly with good results. It is amazing how educated I have become on this in only six short weeks. I am a nurse and knew nothing about this before the birth of my son. I look foward to getting to know everyone and often need reassurance that everything will be okay and he will be able to walk and run around without a problem someday. I am also a nurse and have learned very much about clubfoot in the past 2 years and 10 months! That's how old my son is. He was treated by Dr. Dobbs in St. Louis, MO. We live in KY. He was treated using the Ponseti Method. He had cast from 2 to 10 weeks old with a bilateral tenotomy (very minor surgical procedure that doesn't even require stitches) at 7 weeks old. He wore a DBB (Dennis Browne Bar) for 23 hours a day for 3 months after the casts and still wears it for 12 hours a day (while he sleeps). But during the day he is running everywhere! Guest guest Posted June 8, 2004 Report Share Posted June 8, 2004 Tommy still is in his casts. His last scheduled casting is July 16th and then most likely a tenotomy. I feel very fortunate that we have a doctor that uses the Ponseti method. I am worried about how comfortable he will be once we get to the DBB. Did you guys have any problems? I think maybe he will be fine as I was so concerned about the casts and he is fine being he knows no difference. I have a 2 year old daughter and know how stubborn she can be and can't imagine trying to make her wear anything she doesn't want to. The Ponseti Method calls for 23/7 for 3 months and then reduced hours. The reason I ask about your dr. is that our dr. says the same thing . . waiting until they crawl. I wrote to dr. Ponseti about it and he says that 23/7 until they crawl is unnecessary. Our Dr. is sy in Atlanta. I am trying to keep an open mind and not make myself crazy about it until our visit in July. Quote May 28, 2004 We have observed that after three months of full time brace wear, night and naptime for a total of 16-18 hours are sufficient to prevent a relapse. Once the child is walking about 12-14 hours is adequate. I see no reason to have the child wear the brace 23 hours a day until she is crawling. Straight last shoes are usually more comfortable and are adequate to maintain the correction. Reverse last shoes are not necessary. I.V. Guest guest Posted June 8, 2004 Report Share Posted June 8, 2004 I thought once we got rid of the casts and " got " to move into the shoes life was going to be great. Was I sadly mistaken! It was a struggle at first. His feet were slipping everytime we turned around and it took 2 people and 20 minutes to get the shoes back on. Now though, it takes one person and 2 minutes. So I must say things have gotten much better. He can get out of his shoes if he wants to. Here lately every so often when I go in to get him out of bed he will pull his foot out. But we've talked about it only when he is really mad about something will he pull his foot out. Good luck. He was casted for 5 weeks then a tenotomy, 3 more weeks in casts and has been in the DBB for 5 weeks. He is having another tenotomy on his right foot March 15th then casts for three weeks again. He had a pretty rough time in the DBB when he started but now we know it was because his right foot wouldn't stretch enough to get the heel in the shoe. As for reassuring you that will run and play like everyone else, my sister in law was born with clubfoot and was treated with the Ponseti method and ran track in high school and college. Guest guest Posted June 8, 2004 Report Share Posted June 8, 2004 My daughter was born August 28, 2003 with bilateral clubfeet. She had the casting and the tendon release. She is currently in a DBB and shoes. She is doing great. Right now her feet are positioned the way the doctor wants them positioned. I did run across a couple problems with the shoes (slipping off and blisters) and got some great advice from this group.
