Guest guest
, It depends on what you mean by the word " splint " . Dr. Ponseti calls the FAB/DBB a Foot abduction brace or foot abduction splint. The DBB stands for Denis Browne Bar or Denis Browne Splint. There may be other definitions of splints other than these. There have been some Ponseti method doctors listed in Sweden for a few years and it is possible that it is spreading to other doctors there. Guest guest
and now to my question; i am just curious but i want to know if you can use splints instead of dbb/fab and still follow the ponseti method? i've heard that my sons doctors use to use splints after the cast and the tentomy before but last summer they start to use the dbb's after casts and tentomy. anyone knows if the splints is used in the ponseti method? ------------------------------------------------------- , There is indeed a reason splints are not used in the Ponseti method. Splints (AFOs. KAFO's) simply do not work as well as the DBB/FAB. Dr Ponseti tried them many years ago and the relapse rate was much higher with AFOs than the FAB. The reason being that an AFO cannot hold the foot in exterior rotation. While a KAFO can hold the rotation,it can cause muscle atrophy in the 23/7 period of brace wear. A KAFO basically holds the leg and foot the same way the last cast did. As inconvenient as the FAB can be, say for sleeping and car rides, I seem to recall that that last cast was worse!
