Guest guest
Hi Carole, I'm so sorry to hear that Kris will have to go under anesthesia to be casted. As you may know, we just had Olivia casted for a relapse. She is now 30 months old so is a little older than your Kris. She did very well for the casting, but she did have a tenotomy under a general anesthesia when she was about 4 months old. She did fine, but I totally understand your anxiety! As to how he will handle being casted, I think he will surprise you. He sounds like quite an active little boy! Olivia complained intially about having the cast, but then proceeded to get around like nothing had ever happened! Dr. Ponseti had told me that she would be able to walk and run and jump in the cast, but I just couldn't see how until I actually saw her do it! And she was up and walking around within hours of having it put on. Good luck with the casting and I hope that it all works out for you! Jen & Livie (10-18-01 severe left clubfoot) > > Hello Everyone... > > Well, I went to get Kris put into his first set of cast's on Friday. There was no way he was going to let him get those things on!!! He put up such a fight that all we got on him was a small boot area that went just past his ankles, and that was turned back out before it got hard by Kris! So, he ended up cutting the darn thing off!! all that took an hour or so... > Now, the bad news is on Monday, Kris will be put under anesthesia in the OR of the hospital to get his casting done. This will have to be done for every cast! > (3 or 4) This is really hard for me...but I know from giving him cold med. and anything that is normally suppose to make a child sleepy, he bounces off the walls. > This Friday, the doctor was not sure we were going to be able to get the casts on or not, but wanted to try his hardest so we could avoid putting him under. > Also, I am seeing his doctor in his private office for all this because we were his patience from the beginning before we switched to Shriners where he also does a lot of work...something told me I better do this through his office, that is located at the hospital because I don't know how Shriners works. He said they have the facilities to do the casting under anesthesia there, and when a child his age is in need of casting for any reason they always put them under. I don't know if I am being paranoid or not... > Anyone have there non talking running 22 mo or older baby put into casting? I am SOOO, not looking forward to what he will be like when he finds out he is going to have these casts on that go all the way up to his thigh!!! And he can't run free!!! > Kris is a very strong willed little guy too. > help? > > Thank you, > Carole mom to Kris born 6-11-02 > Bilateral Clubfoot-treated w/Ponseti method from day 7, Same Dr. throughout. > Going into his second set of casting due to turning of the forefoot, per request of Dr. Ponseti, after looking at pictures of his feet. > >
Guest guest
There may certainly be something I don't understand about this, but WHY can't they just give him demerol or novocaine or laughing gas like at the dentist or SOMETHING to just make Kris relaxed and a bit loopy? I remember after Evan had his tenotomy with no anesthetic, our pediatrician asked why they didn't give him demerol so it must be safe for young kids. >Hello Everyone... > >Well, I went to get Kris put into his first set of cast's on Friday. >There was no way he was going to let him get those things on!!! Guest guest
hi carole, first off i can't imagine how difficult this will be for you guys, but honestly it will probably be harder on you than kris! kids are so resiliant (sp?) and constantly surprise us. i just have a second but thought i would ask you if the doc/aesthesiologist said anything about twilight sedation. it's used on adults and kids (pediatric dentists) so maybe something like that would work if kris has to be " out " . it's not the same as local anesthesia, you are coherent and can come out of it extremely fast. i had it for a (ahum...elective procedure :-) and was amazed at how well i felt. just an fyi. i've attached a link below. hope all goes great for you guys!
