Guest guest
Just thought I'd address this issue Inga questioned & perhaps shed some light on it: Inga wrote: >>> " Why are our thyroids not functioning the way they should? " <<< First off, I'm an astrologer of some 40 years duration. We all know that Mars is male & Venus is female, don't we? Do we all know that the Sun is considered male & the Moon female? Also realize there are only two " female " planets (Venus & Moon)or " ladies " in the zodiac used in astrology & all the rest (Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune & Pluto) are " male " or called " lords " . Mercury, also a " lord " is considered neutral/non-gendered yet is always pictured as a young man (male also) with wings on his feet. Kind of like a male " gang bang " on the only two females, IMHO. Male dominance & overpowering to the max is what it's always amounted to, if you get the patriarchal male-worship/dominating/masculine overpowering structured greater picture. All world religions were basically based on this " sky deities " concept. Thus all world cultures were as well from the first emergence of our known civilization back in ancient Mesopotamia, the first known culture to have studied & recorded astrology/astronomy which were one & the same art/science ages ago. So realize, please that the main world church/state religions/governments are also still male dominant as are the culture(s) in which they now exist or from which they originated. These sky deities, the planets & our star, the Sun (Son), & Mother Earth's satellite, the Moon, were worshipped as gods & goddesses in the ancient Roman & Greek. Our planet, Earth, has been known as Goddess Gaia, a female planet as well as Her other names " Mother Earth/Mother Nature " express. As also does Her other description as " Third Rock From the Sun " . And in earlier & also current times the planets & Sun or " Geodes/Goddesses/Gods " were/are called by other names, in Hebrew, Arabic, Hindu, Chinese, Mayan, Aztec & other pagan religions & their astrologies & zodiac. [Note: God/Geode =(singular/Self) & Goddess/Geodes = (plural/Relationships)] In astrology, the different planets & the signs & houses they govern or " rule " also govern the function of various parts of the body/mind. The thyroid is prominent as Venus, Goddess of Love, Beauty, Health, Speech/Throat, Writing, Self-expression, Intelligence & Relationships. Venus & the two signs/houses she governs or " rules " , Taurus/2nd house/ heath/values/possessions & Libra/7th house/relationships/marriage/ partnerships, rules the throat/neck & therefore the thyroid gland/larynx/ voice. Other planets & their signs rule other body parts & functions. A specialist in this knowledge is called a " medical astrologer " , a branch of this art/science, I never fully studied in detail as some others have but have been learning in bits & pieces along the way. But please realize that since our American culture & most others in our world have been patriarchal male-dominating/overpowering for at least 5,000 years. And that applies as well to our religions as well as our medical/ health system & the current AMA, pharmeceuticals & governments... all originally male/man-made concepts & structures. No females allowed " in the beginning " of same. We therefore still exist within a church/state male-deity worshipping, male dominating, female denigrating/demeaning/diminishing system. It's changing now in America, yes. But only in the past 100 years or so (a mere drop in the time bucket) in the USA out of about 5,000 years of its global existence. Before the current patriarchy & God/male deity belief/dominance, most global cultures worshipped The Goddess, the Divine Mother/Creatress of All That Is for at least 15,000 years. She was considered to be imminent & a within everything & everyone on Earth & in the Heavens. So all religious/governmental cultures (mostly by the people themselves) were Matriarchal, more relationship, co-equal gender partnership oriented & therefore more male/female balanced coequally & respectfully. Women, also were the healers, herbalists, shamans, physicians or " medicine women/midwives " & therefore were revered, respected & beloved. But as we know, millions of them were brutally tortured, drowned, hanged, beheaded or burned as " witches " . Even in our so-called " free country " in its early days in Salem, Massachusets during the witch hunts & " Burnng Times " which lasted centures in Europe & the USA. So much so that a huge portion of the female population ceased to exist for centuries & males became dominant in the global population. Female babies were likewise sexually mutiliated for the male's sexual pleasure, killed or drowned & still are in China & many other parts of the modern world. These memories remain in the female consciousness & behaviour & cause female fear of the male & deferring to males as " authority figures " from worship of a male deity down to the ordinary male from infancy into old manhood. Father God/Father Time is depicted as an old man with a white beard sitting on the throne of authority or the corporate/government chairman/ president. His " only " son is depicted as the New Year's infant in diapers & in a manger as the as " new Sun/Son " of the solar calendar year. The solar calendar was invented by the Roman " Christian " church. In Matrilineal Goddess-worship/relationship ancient times, a lunar (Moon) calendar reckoning was used for keeping time associated with the monthly menses (moon-sis) of the female cycle as her ability to incubate & bring forth a child & bleed on a regular basis without dying or being sick was considered a miracle & a power owned only by magickal females. But the Greeks & Romans mainly, established male-only medical schools for men. The Greek Hippocrates, in fact, is responsible for all doctors (formerly only males) taking his Hippocratic oath. So female doctors in our day & age now learn the male medicine man ways from the earliest male-deity worshiping (mostly Greek/Roman) patriarchal religions & political male-dominating/empowered cultures. So that said, I will quote parts of an important article " Venus & Women's Healing " I am reading in Dell Horoscope magazine, Feb. 2005 issue, pgs 8-20. Now this isn't news to me by any means as I've been studying the issues the article deals with for about 35 years as related to our culture. But the author: a R. Gassman, makes a few interesting points to ponder which I'll quote [brackets mine]: [Note: The Sun rules Leo, the 5th sign/house & the Heart. Leo is also the sign of " The Child " & the Male Will. The Moon rules Cancer, the 4th sign/house & the breasts/milk, ovaries, uterus/womb, etc. Cancer is the sign of " The Mother " & the Female Emotions]. From " VENUS & WOMEN'S HEALING " by a R. Gassman " In the mythology of many cultures, the male is represented by the Sun and the woman by the Moon...the Sun refers to the body & represents male energy, vitality (the mythical " hero " ). The moon refers to the inner soul & represents females, emotions (the mythical " damsel " )......an eclipse [sun/Moon conjunction]symbolizes the union of the body & soul, of masculine & feminine, a time of balancing the outer & inner parts of oneself.... " " To integrate the significance of this phenomenon, one must consider contradictions that need reconciling. The male [sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto] & female [Moon, Venus] parts of the self, the body & soul components, need balance....What courage & daring does one's inner hero need in order to rescue the damsel in distress? " " In a patriarchal culture, women live in a constant state of eclipse, struggling with inner demons of depression, struggling with the male/female power issues, both within & without. In the patriarchal culture, the feminine emotions are overtaken by the male will. The common result is depression in women. " [And thus, also " depressed/repressed " thyroid & endocrine glandular dysfunction]. " According to the DSM IV-TR (Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) there is 6% lifetime prevalence for developing depressive disorder; and this is 2-3 times more likely in women. For Major Depressive Disorder, there is 10-20% lifetime prevalence for women. During the childbearing years, 10% of women are depressed during pregnancy (Manus, et.al, 2000). If this is brought into adult years, what then at mide-life? " " Common metaphors for depression are heaviness, baggage, upward struggle. It can also be considered a darkness from which there is little escape. Major depression is one of the most common mental illnesses today. It is estimated that 17.6 million adult Americans suffer from depression, while anxiety disorders, including panic disorder, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder & generalized anxiety are the most common types of psychiatric disorder, accounting for 32% of the total mental health expenditures in the U. S. (Gibson, 1999). " " While there is no existing theory that adequately explains the complex phenomenon of depression, or the higher tendency in females, women's orientation to relationships [Venus/Libra], which is central to their identity & emotional well-being, cannot be ignored (Jack, 1991). As for healing an illness that some would argue is the result of a patriarchal system, with a strategy that encourages yet more patriarchal views, is it any wonder that the rate of depression has been rising since the [Flower-children/Love-ins]1960s? What then, is missing? What resource has become increasingly scarce? I maintain that what is missing is TRUE LOVE. " " In their book 'A General Theory of Love', , Amni & Lannon (2000) discuss the evolutionary impact of human development on neurological function & general health & well-being. They say that 'traditional [male-invented/male-dominated] medicine has evolved to disregard the emotional aspects of healing' (p. 211). " " They suggest that people have a growing need to access neural processes that engender emotional balance & feel that alternative healing, which is quite prevalent, sprang up in response to this need for relatedness [Venus], close listening, essential human connection, which is feminine [Venus/Moon] in nature, rather than incidental, cut & dry, white-male privileged interactions that disregard much of the experience of people. " " et.al. present their case describing the brain as composed of three parts: the reptilian, the limbic & the neocortex. The 'reptilian'......... rudimentary interactions..keeps the automatic systems functioning... The 'limbic'..the seat of dreams..contains..hippocampus, amygdala... expression, intuition, emotions..female...mammalian..capacity to care for..take care of in interactions. The 'neocortex'...gray matter..speaking, writing, planning, reasoning, abstraction..the male. " " ..The role of mothers [Moon/Venus], because..we are born with a brain system that promotes safety by establishing an intrinsic bond with the mother, is crucial in establishing limbic resonance..When the limbic or female needs are omitted, there is grief, loss, & sadness that dominate the life. These feelings prevail in depression...as if the absence of limbic resonance creates the darkness. " " In her narrative studies of women who were depressed, Jack (1991) found that the trigger of loss meant loss of self, loss of self-esteem, and a diminished sense of self that occurs within unsatisfactory relationships. She found that the inherent in-equality of gender roles & the quality of a woman's relationship to her partner are key. " " The natural tendency to care for others, as in a relational model, in the context of a culture filled with inequality, allows women's emotional reality to become very distorted...'bias against their gender & the pervasive sexualization & devaluation that accompany femininity'....the inherent need of women to relate..experience a growing isolation & loss of self when attempts to establish intimacy are foiled by a system that works against this goal...the limbic experinece is emotional & therefore filled with gaps in language & vocabulary...loss of self in marriage/intimate relationships, [loss of voice/expression..Venus/throat/thyroid] in trying to fit an image provided by others & loss of presence due to fear of being wrong, or wronged, are these that emerge as women's truths are repeatedly invalidated. " " Given this reality for women, depression ends up being taught by mothers as a means of survival; to attain intimacy so longed for in an unequal relationship, women often must learn silence & diminishment. Women are silenced [Venus/throat/thyroid], as women were silenced in the past, out of protection, out of caution, out of fear. " " There are fears that women carry that lead to silencing; fear of annihilation, unliveability, and wrongness. These conditions are heavy, and lead to resentment & Anger. One must wonder how a woman can have anger, when, as Adrienne Rich asks: 'Into whose hands are we to deliver our children, who are we training them to obey, and for whose benefit? " (Rich in Jack,p.127). " " Their essential root connections to creativity are inhibited. When this happens it seems fairly clear that high levels of depression among women are an inevitable response to living in a culture that fears, envies, & therefore devalues women. The invalidation is a gentle erosion. The result is loss of self-esteem, rage seething just benearth the surface. " " Women are distanced from their inherent ways of knowing by the survival of the mothers, by perpetuations of the educational system, and the societal structure. The male perspective discounts femininity & society reinforces a woman's hesitation. With the need to attach so inherently a part of the human experience, women do much to secure attachments. " " Jack describes that women engage in 'safe-keeping' behavior to secure & maintain whatever hint of attchment there is. Sweet compliance becomes a defense against hostility. This results in a loss of dialogue with an intimate partner & significant self-censoring, anger, rebellion, power struggles, and game-playing. There is much that is not shared for fear of the repercussions. " " With the two goals of adulthood as being to establish intimacy & to develop & express intimacy & to develop & express unique capabilities, to be authentic & to firm up the self (son, 1950), the cards are stacked against women. If attachment is not secure, & if there is no limbic resonance, regulation, or revision, then depression seems inevitable. " " There is an essential magnetic attraction between the male & female energies of the human. This is the essence of the alternative healing arts - to balance the basic male/female polarity...but it becomes particularly relevant at mid-life....Healing is often a loaded buzzword, particularly in today's 'new age' lexicon...it implies a process..a lifelong quest to find balance, health & well-being. Healing potential begins when one experiences congruence, unconditional positive regard, & empathy. " " For women, these shared moments expand possibility & widen the scope to open to the experience of the transpersonal...Awareness of the transpersonal begins to move women away from depression. The transpersonal perspective suggests that something can be done about resolving the gnawing existential angst...What helps...is finding balance in the male/female dynamic, in the culture, within oneself, in relationship. " " ...many artists..felt compelled to bring the Goddess forth..Venus, the Goddess of the feminine...amazing depth, teetering constantly between raw emotion & exquisite refinement, between passion & steely resolve. This is the feminine. " " Various cultures invoke various myths to embody the feminine in the consciousness of the people. Venus [throat/thyroid/Voice] is known by many names: Aphrodite, Athena, Persephone, Demeter, Psyche, Medusa, Hera, the Moon, , the Black Madonna, mother, sister, daughter, friend, Isis, Osun, Yemeya, Oya, Quan Yin, Tara - to name a few familiar connections... " " Particularly in the form of the dark goddesses, the dark experience of women was acknowledged. The darkness of the body from where life emerges, the inner cave of the feminine where light is not necessary, provides a space for the retelling. Story & titles contribute to the energy of transformation in the healing process. The power of story captures events of a group through larger social, political, & economic changes & offers a way to interpret & make meaning. ...The healing in question is the journey of all women, and it is the journey of all therapists as we seek to expand our array of tools to respond... " " While will belongs to the neocortex, emotion belongs to the limbic section of the brain, described earlier. Emotions are difficult to translate into words, but we know as humans that emotions are critical to our well-being. Poetry, music, art & metaphor are some ways in which we experience emotion. Freud once said about femininity: 'Inquire from your own experiences of life, or turn to the poets'. " During infancy, the method of establishing limbic resonance is rooted. A person (the infant) [sun/Leo & Mars/Aries] seeks another (the mother) [Moon/Cancer & Venus/Libra-Taurus] to balance & direct their functions. It is a mutuality, a telepathic synchronizing exchange. A person is unable to stabilize on [their] own, & that human function of finding people who regulate emtionality is critical. " " People who can regulate emotions are the people we tend to want to be near. One's attachment determines the ultimate nature of a person's mind. et.al. note that 'the necessary intermingling of physiology makes relatedness [Venus/thyroid/voice] & communal [Moon/female glands/organs] living the center of human life'. " The symptoms of limbic lapses or omission at the critical stage of attachment are anxiety & depression. Like experimental monkeys who were found to experience alarm & protest [hyperT], and then despair [hypoT] gets engrained & replays over time into adulthood. " " While women have had connections to healing in a variety of ways historically [her-story-cly] in the American culture, it wasn't until the 1990s & the movement of managed care that alternative healing techniques began to gain a foothold. Medicine that was once 'mammalian', i.e., about the nature of emotions [Moon/Venus] - has turned reptilian. However, the human need to attend to limbic imperatives is still crucial, as emotion [Female/Venus/Moon] in the human is over 100 millions years old, while cognition [Male/Sun/Mars] is just a few hundred thousand old (, et,al.,2000). " The essential emotion is love. Love is about Venus [throat/thyroid], the many faces of which need to be integrated, particularly in the woman's soul. There have been numerous poems written about love, always with the same theme or quest - acceptance for who one is. " " Love [Venus] is a function of the human soul [Moon]...Poetry depicts a moment...counseling is a moment; what happens in groups, in family counseling, in astrology & other healing arts represents a moment of revelation that helps people reach their potential for fulfillment & joy, a basic humn need. The reflection is simply a quest of adulthood. " " ...the feminine principle in the Tao Te Ching: 'It is named the dark animal goddess and the doorway to the dark animal goddess & is called the root of heaven & earth. Like an endless thread, she is as if persevering & accomplishing effortlessly.' " " How unlike the experience of most women, particularly most women with depression! " Healing is a spiritual process. The spiritual embellishments of life are feminine, since the matriarchs were the guardians of the mysteries, and matriarchal consciousness contains a treasure of guarded secrets & psychic seeds. The matriarchs were comfortable inhabitants of the temples of The Goddess. There are many symbols of healing & of ancestral women...the quiver, the bow, the cauldron, the spindle, the spoon, masks, mirror & wreaths of string are some of the forgotten signs that remind the soul [Moon], the feminine [Venus], of its origins. " " Healing through the use of alternative healing arts links the feminine with the past, the ancient past. 'The cure for an emotional wound is in the wound itself. The female void can't be cured by conjunction with a male, but rather an internal conjunction, an integration of its own parts, by re-member-ing the mother-daughter body.(Hall, p. 680) " " The reference points for this process...are the four elements of her [Wolff's/1941] typology for women: " The Mother - the caretaker The Hetaira - the companion/concubine The Medial - the one who mediates the unknown The Amazon - the who goes off alone " " The key to women's health & healing is the integration of all these parts of the female experience. These are the faces of Venus [thyroid], the feminine Goddess.....In feminine consciousness, Goddess-centered spirituality, & healing, a woman knows her personal power & her truth & she appreciates it because it leads the way to true authenticity, which allows the freedom of confident action. There is the shift from being 'good' to being honest. " " Women's deepest selves are relational. Vulnerability to depression lies in the quality of women's relationships. The self in relation to others begs for healing. To heal wounds that are so basic to biology, to primal interactional functions, a woman must make meaning with herself & with others, in groups, in relationship to others, to objects of the earth, & through expression. " " There is a need for authentic dialogue & intimacy, & this is where therapy one-on-one & in groups can be beneficial. Venus, the Goddess of love, of art & music, representative of woman, is social, needs widening circles & new forms of connections that transcend power differences (Jack, 1991) to allowe her to find her own truth. " " Artists & poets are emissaries of Venus..Resonating & vibrating to a higher vibration, they are the prophets & healers. The return of the Goddess suggests an opportunity to widen the range....we stand on call to heal personal wounds, as well as political & social wounds. There are many pathways to transformation, but all healing roads lead to Venus [throat/thyroid]. While future genertions may look back & offer analysis on our times, it's important to remember we are living the shift. It is in the here & now, with male & female in search of balance. " Original messages: Cindi wrote: >>> Kerry, > I wish I could talk about all this with my Mom too. She died 10 years ago...and her autopsy indicated she had Hashimoto's. She tried so hard...and even wanted to believe in alternative methods, and natural things...but they just had her over a barrel and too scared. They had her believeing that if she did not do what they said and told her to do, she would be even sicker and die. SO sad. She died of heart failure last summer after a valiant struggle.
