Guest guest Posted February 16, 2006 Report Posted February 16, 2006 On Monday, my dr put me on Ziac for high BP, back on my glucophage for insulin resistance (which i'd been off of for almost 1 year), and on wellbutrin. Today my bp is measuring normal and i feel a lot better - i've been eating SB since Monday morning. But the scale is down 8 lbs already - isn't that too much? Don't get me wrong, i am thrilled on one hand, but 8 lbs in 4 days?! Could any of my above medications cause this as opposed to the diet? If so, will the rapid weight loss stop once my body gets used to the meds? I know that glucophage CAN help with losing weight, but i've taken the same amounts before and it's never done anything.... If you think about it, some of the meds you're on could potentially have a sizable affect on your weight. Just doing a quick search on glucophage on Yahoo's drug guide (which comes from drugs.com IIRC), it says: ************************************************************* Metformin is used to regulate blood glucose (sugar) levels. Metformin works in three ways: first, it reduces the amount of glucose produced by your liver; second, it reduces the amount of glucose absorbed from food through your stomach; and third, it makes the insulin that your body produces work better to reduce the amount of glucose already in your blood. ************************************************************* To say the least, that's going to affect how your body processes glucose and that is of course linked directly to weight gain/loss. The Wellbutrin is an anti-depressant. That will affect your weight INDIRECTLY because it peps you up a bit. If you're up and at 'em more now than before, then of course you're more active and that will help. From a more direct perspective, one of the side effects of Wellbutrin IS weight loss. Whether you're experiencing it or not is anyone's guess at this point. Another factor could be the amount of weight you have to lose. If you have a great deal to take off, then you'll take more off more quickly. If it is your time of the month you will be losing excess water more quickly than during other times. If you've been taking in a great deal of sodium and just recently stopped, your body may be purging the excess fluids it has been maintaining as a result of the over-consumption of sodium. (Which, BTW, your high blood pressure may benefit from reducing your sodium to under 2,000mg per day.) Another possibility is that you've recently changed your eating habits. You may be eating less often, less food, and so forth. This is a substantial factor during the first two weeks of the SBD and is largely responsible for the initial rapid weight loss most SBDers experience. Rapid weight losses, such as what we see on the SBD, tend to mellow out within a week or so. Now, if this is a side effect from the meds you're on it may be something more and require a consult with your physician. End all be all -- if you're concerned about the large loss in 4 days, call your doctor and talk it over with her/him. All the best.... Quote
Guest guest Posted February 16, 2006 Report Posted February 16, 2006 , Was it you whose doc put you on South Beach? If so, talk to him and see what he says. But, if you have insulin resistance and a lot of weight to lose, that's probably nothing bad. I lost 9 lbs my first week. When I used to work for Wt. Watchers, we had a woman lose 22 lbs her first week, because she was very heavy and had lots of water weight to lose. So, it probably is something like that going on and will slow down by the third week. But, you can always check with your doctor. ann > > On Monday, my dr put me on Ziac for high BP, back on my glucophage for insulin resistance (which i'd been off of for almost 1 year), and on wellbutrin. > Today my bp is measuring normal and i feel a lot better - i've been eating SB since Monday morning. > But the scale is down 8 lbs already - isn't that too much?
