Guest guest
Basically I'm starting to become really concerned about the long-term welfare of those that have chosen the low carb path and I wanted to share my research with others in hopes that they will continue to stick to sensible, health-promoting ways to control their weight like Weight Watchers Us doctors don't get much nutrition training in medical school. So when my patients started coming to me on the Atkins Diet, I frankly didn't know what to tell them. Atkins' recommendations certainly seemed at odds with what little I was taught. So I decided to try to figure out the truth for myself. I pulled all the research I could find on low carb diets over the last 30 years and put it on a new website I created: http://www.AtkinsFacts.org So the next time you or someone else has questions about low carb diets you can tell them to " get the facts " at AtkinsFacts.org I hope it's useful for people, - -- Greger, M.D. http://www.AtkinsFacts.org Sorting Fact from Fad mhg1@... 185 South St #6 Boston, MA 02130
Guest guest
I am sure that I am in the minority here, but frankly I give your " report " very little credence. You've never posted here before and just popped in to spout the " evils " of low-carb. Hmmm. How incredibly kind of you. Many of the " quotes " you give from Dr. Atkins are in actuality misquotes or taken completely out of context should anyone but me care to do the research. Secondly, every third line in your so-called report *glorifies* vegetarism. Are you a vegan ?? Perhaps threatened by the new interest in eating meat the US has required?? And thirdly, you completely fail to mention that for thirty years people have not only been losing but maintaining on low-carb diets, with lower cases of diabetis (many could stop taking their meds for the first time in their life), lower bad cholesterol and higher good cholesterol and absolutely no signs of heart disease. Thirty years . Trackable people who are more than willing to stand up and say they have eaten this way. Why weren't they interviewed for your so-called report? Your report contained very little true fact. It neglected to mention the FACT that over thirty years of " personal testimony " has initiated the AMA *itself* to take on an extensive FIVE YEAR study because it no longer fully believes that " low-fat " is the ONLY way to go for everyone. It didn't mention that in the initial 6 mths on the diet, bad cholestol drops significantly. Diabetics improve greatly. Where was that in your " study " ? Where was the fact that since the " low-fat " craze began, that America's obesity rates tripled? Where is the fact that prior to the 1960's, early 1970's when " low fat " became all the rage, people regulary ate eggs and bacon for breakfast, that a side of pasta or rice with the meal was nearly unheard of - it was meat and potatoes or some other veggie? Are potatoes and veggies carbs? Sure. Are they the enormous bowl fulls of pastas and rices (aka carbs) that " low-fat " followers believed in? No. Does Atkins and other " low-carb " programs allow for veggies and fruits? ABSOLUTELY. After the first two weeks. You can even have 100% whole wheat bread. Did you read that part of the book, ? I will agree that calories in, calories out is what determines weightloss. Does low-carb work for everyone. Absolutely not. Does low-fat work for everyone? Again, absolutely not. How you get there is not necessarily a factor if you can maintain the loss. Can you eat carbs and high fat together? No. Can you eat protein and high fat together? Looks like its possible. Either end of the spectrum may have its downsides (minimal as they may be), but eating meat and meat by-products might not be so evil afterall. Not what you vegans like to hear, is it ? Guest guest
I'm kinda confused why you are sending this to a Weight Watchers group. I'm not following the atkins diet and I doubt many people are here... however some may be combing elements from both diets. Did you mean to join a low carb group and post this to that group? Unless I've been reading the posts here incorrectly the focus of this group is not trashing other diets. I quite happily follow the Weight Watchers plan. A plan that I have found works very well for me. I am not going to go around and tell others that my path is the path that they should follow nor am I going to tell them that a diet that a doctor recommended to me (yes I was told by a doctor to do Atkins or low carb due to my having PCOS) is the wrong one. I don't do that diet (though i do incorporate elements of it) because it doesn't fit with my lifestyle at the present time. Yvonne --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
