Please print as these are the detailed chat instructions as well.

As you enter the room, you will be given a number which will be

openly given on the chat site. That number is sequential thus in the

order you entered. When your number comes up, you may ask one

question and only one question will be open for the doctor at a

time. When he has completed answering the question the next person

in the sequential order will be allowed to post their question. You

will be notified by private message when it is your turn to ask your

question just prior to the time to post it. You might find it

helpful to have pre-posted the question in preparation for entering

but be very careful not to hit the send key until you have been

given clearance to do so. Please post your question in ALL CAPS as

this will help Dr. Enns recognize each new question. In this case -

it will not be considered shouting. When our guest has completed

answering the question he will post a " ? " to let us know that he

is ready for the next question to be asked.

Please reserve this chat for questions to be asked of our guest

only. It is a very special gift of time and expertise that the guest

is offering us and we should remember to treat our guest with

respect. If you

wish to chat with someone in the room, please go to the private chat

and communicate. Anyone who violates the instructions will receive a

warning. If a second warning is necessary, the person will lose

their privilege to be in the chat and will be removed. We hope that

we don't find it necessary to do this.

Our guest is Dr. M. Enns, M.B., Ch.B. Dr. Enns is an

Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and director of the Biochemical

Genetics

Program at Stanford University. He received his medical degree from

the

University of Glasgow, Scotland. He completed his internship and

residency

(including chief residency) at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. He

was trained

in clinical genetics and clinical biochemical genetics at the

University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Enns has developed a

busy clinical service in metabolism and sees both children and

adults, although children are his primary focus. His research

interests include novel means of diagnosing and treating

mitochondrial disorders, with an emphasis on antioxidant therapy,

lysosomal disorders, and newborn screening by tandem mass

spectrometry. He is a founding memberof the newly organized Bay Area

Mitochondrial Association (BAMA), a group of clinicians and basic

scientists from Stanford University, Children's Hospital of Oakland

Research Institute, and the University of California, San Francisco

dedicated to advancing the field of mitochondrial medicine.

The chat transcript will be available on the MDA website as soon as

it has been edited by Dr. Enns and the MDA Chat Administrator.

Sometimes this takes a considerable amount of time as these

individuals are very busy. We ask for your patience while this is

being prepared. Previous chats may be read by going to FYI - Dr.

Enns was recently awarded a research grant

by the UMDF.
