Guest guest Posted January 21, 2006 Report Posted January 21, 2006 > My new copy of the completely revised SBD Good Eats Good > Carbs Guide book, on page 75 at the bottom of the page does > say that veggie burgers (not named by brand & not stated to > be only Kraft products) are rated as G (Good to eat) in Phase > I, II, & III of SBD. Also, this same book on page 104 about > mid point on this page lists Garden burgers as also rated as > G (Good to eat) in Phase I, II, III of SBD. Also, on the > Boca Burger website, there is a link to South Beach Diet > information to click into & this link states that each box of > Boca Burgers does carry the SBD seal of approval & it also > states that each individual product they make does state on > the individual box, which Phase of SBD diet that particular > product is OK for. > > is the one who is correct, ann & are not > correct that Boca Burgers are wrong for SBD. Oh, I wouldn't go there so easily. Just because the Good Fats/Carbs book says that veggie burgers and Garden Burgers are allowed doesn't mean that Boca Burgers are ok. First and foremost, a Boca Burger is NOT a Garden Burger -- they're different brands. Also, not ALL Boca Burgers are allowed on the SBD (certainly not on all phases) and as I mentioned, I was not aware they now had a supposed SBD friendly line. Boca Foods isn't exactly jumping out of the gates to tell folks on their web site about the SBD. There's no use of the SBD logo/labeling on their site at all. Information on it is not on the HOME page or under WHAT'S NEW...or HEALTH & NUTRITION (and sub-categories) and it's not on their Products page either.... They have it buried under the FAQs.... " Our portfolio of South Beach Diet Recommended Boca products includes the following Burger varieties: Original Vegan, All American Flame Grilled, Grilled Vegetable, Roasted Garlic, Roasted Onion, and Boca Cheeseburgers. What's more, Boca Ground Burger and Boca Breakfast Patties and Links are also South Beach Diet recommended. " So there's the list that Boca says are ok for the SBD. Buried a few menu layers down. The chik'n, mentioned in the original thread, is not on the list. This list includes their " meatless products " only, however -- not their organic products (all of which appear to have added sugar), and it does not include the other Boca products such as their sausages, pizza, lasagna, and chili. Something I have to question is how it is that products with what appears to be added sugar could be included as well. For example, the breakfast patties have 1g of sugar per serving and include potato starch, brown sugar and " washed raw sugar " . The Breakfast Links have 2g of sugar per serving and include the same. Clearly these are NOT SBD friendly but yet they are listed as SBD recommended. I can't say on the " Boca Ground " as their website does not carry nutritional information for the product (it links to the sausage product instead). There are other errors on the site as well, FWIW. Also as I mentioned after further discussion, Boca Burgers contain a bunch of other garbage that really isn't that healthy, so one should think carefully about whether or not to include it in your diet. It should NOT be used as a staple of an SBD menu either, nor should it be considered a substitute for a vegetable serving by any stretch of the imagination. Lastly, this person is supposed to be on P1. There is no way these products are P1 friendly. They have various wheat based ingredients in them, a few contain actual added sugar and starches, and other brands contain oat ingredients. Grains are not allowed during P1 so she should not be eating these on P1 at all, regardless of whether one thinks these overprocessed foods are ok or not. In fact, I don't I know of ANY commercial veggie burger that would be acceptable on phase 1 of the SBD, even the Dr Praeger patties. There may be one out there but it certainly isn't a Boca, Morningstar Farms or Gardenburger brand. I don't know how they could make one since every veggie burger out there has oats, rice or wheat in it. Quote
Guest guest Posted January 21, 2006 Report Posted January 21, 2006 , Just leave it alone and let'em eat what they want. ;-) Orchid, Dr. A sold his soul to the devil (AKA Kraft). You're entitled to your opinion, is entitled to his as am I. Read the ingredients, read the book and then make an informed decision and not one based upon whether a little blue Southbeach logo is on the food item. Approvals, in my opinion, really mean nothing without looking at a complete list of the ingredients. The FDA " approves " things everyday that are proven unsafe and even deadly, I suspect the mods are ready to shut this thread down. Guest guest Posted January 21, 2006 Report Posted January 21, 2006 Orchid, I'll sum it up very simply -- if you didn't get it from what I said in that post, then you're not going to get it period. Judging from your reply, I doubt you really even read it. I'm sorry, but I just don't have the time or inclination to go into it any further with you; my resources are better spent elsewhere. The best of luck to you in all your endeavors.... Quote
Guest guest Posted January 21, 2006 Report Posted January 21, 2006 > Just leave it alone and let'em eat what they want. ;-) All I'm trying to do is teach people how to think for themselves. The SBD is based around a set of basic concepts. If you understand those basic concepts then you don't need some book to tell you that this product is ok and the other is not -- you can make that determination for yourself. This whole thing with the food industry jumping on board and throwing out these products is truly sad. Some of these Boca Burgers, although far from healthy, do fit the criteria for P2 -- I've said that. I still wouldn't eat them, but they're definitely P2 permissible, based on their ingredients list (SOME are, not all). No matter what the " Good Carbs, Good Fats " book is saying, the simple fact is that the ingredients do not conform with the guidelines for P1. So I guess one has to decide which way to go -- with the concepts taught in the book, or with the paid endorsements' opinions. Maybe you're right, Jackie. Maybe I should just start ignoring people who get caught up in the web of these endorsed products. I just hate to see folks who want to get out of the obesity run fall victim again to the food industry that keeps them there so easily. Quote

There's a lot of foods that aren't on either the approved list or the " foods to avoid " list. They probably cover most of the common ones, but there will be times when you might want to try something that's neither explicitly approved or forbidden. That's when you need to understand the principles of the diet at the phase you're in and understand how to figure out whether or not you can have it. __________________________________________________ Quote
Guest guest Posted January 23, 2006 Report Posted January 23, 2006 I was pretty excited to read that boca burgers were " safe " but I'm of the " if it sounds too good (and too processed) to be true, it probably is " thinking too. Does anyone have any good recipes for their own veggie burgers? I'd love to start moving away from meat & I think that'd be a good start. I'm going to do a search online, I just didn't know if anyone had anything tried & true. -- ~Jenn -------------- Original message -------------- Never heard of a Boca Burger till today. Hey Jenn -- I posted a few the other day and you can find others by looking at veg*n recipe sites such as http://www.fatfreevegan.com for example. ...who is eating his first meal of the day, a big bowl of bean soup. Guest guest Posted January 23, 2006 Report Posted January 23, 2006 Lentil-Barley Burgers 1/2 cup red lentils (MUST be red, since green lentils do not " mush " ) 1/2 cup barley 1/4 cup finely diced onions 1 clove miced garlic 1 Tbsp parsley 1 tsp black pepper 2.5 cups water Bring water to boil. Add lentils and barley, onions and garlic. Cook for 40 minutes, until water is all absorbed. Put in fridge to cool off. When cooled, add parsley and pepper. Form into patties and pan fry in some olive oil. ann > > I was pretty excited to read that boca burgers were " safe " but I'm of the " if it sounds too good (and too processed) to be true, it probably is " thinking too. The SBD doesn't really use " numbers " per se. When you start P2, you want to ease into it -- add a single serving of grain and a single serving of fruit to your daily regimen. Maybe a slice of toast at breakfast and a small apple for lunch. Do this for a week and see how it affects you. Then, during week 2, switch it up and try something else. After a few weeks to a month (or more, if you like) of doing this, you can increase to 1-2 servings of each per day. After a while, go to 2-3 servings each day of each. The idea is to sort of experiment and see what happens to your weight loss as you add the foods back. You'll find some stall you while others have no affect whatsoever. If cravings return, you back off, maybe revisit P1 a few days if you like, and try something else. As they say, slow and steady wins the race. Quote
