Guest guest
Luli's hanger band was pretty loose at 1st! But they grow so fast it seems like it fits so perfectly now. If it starts to rub though call the ortho! Jen Mommy to 4...and 1 more!!!! "Luli" www.babiesonline.com/babies/j/jens5th/
Guest guest
This may be a really stupid question, but..... My son, Cohen, received his STARband on Tuesday. The Orthotist cut the helmet to fit correctly over his ears and over his eyes, so that's working out great. I'm worried that the darn thing is too big. I don't understand how it could possibly be working because it's not tight enough. When you look down on his head from the top you can see space between his head and the helmet. It seems to shift awfully easy and won't stay in place. Is this normal? I understand that he must grow into the blank spots, but there are a TON of blank spots! Also, we're still in the "work-in" period where we're on for one hour, then off for an hour. Every time I take it off Cohen has red spots in the same places. One on each cheek where the helmet rubs, and a red mark on his forehead where the "bossing" is. Is this normal? We have an appointment next Tuesday for my other twin, Brody, to receive his STARband. Should I wait until then to ask questions? Thanks, Val Cohen STARbanded 7/18 Brody to be STARbanded 7/
Guest guest
Hi Val, The bands are made a little bit big to allow room for growth. Can you post a picture of him in his band? I'd call your ortho and voice your concerns. Hopefully he/she will be able to put your mind at ease. Keep us posted.
Guest guest
Hey Val, My son, Boulder's STARband is fitting him the same way. When he gets up in the morning it is really low in the front. It seems to shift a lot too. I am also wondering the same thing that you are. Boulder has had his helmet for 6 days. Guest guest
My son had a space like that in his helmet too. Eventually it got smaller and smaller. Sometimes after an adjustment it feels pretty loose again but that doesn't seem to last long that way. Keep in mind some shifting is normal, I was told shifting up to an inch is even normal. Guest guest
Okay, Val. Here's my two cents... Yes, they say some shifting is normal. My dd's helmet has always fit 'big' on her. Actually, sometimes I would call it sloppy. It doesn't just shift, it flops forward and back. But... even she has shown great improvement. I think what happens is the ortho can turn it into a passive band without meaning to. This isn't going to hurt your child in any way (as far as I know) but it makes things much slower. The child's whole head has to grow into the helmet instead of just letting the flat spots grow out. That being said, just be careful at your future appointments. It would seem like Sophie was just starting to grow into her helmet a bit, and they would shave out the whole thing and it would be sloppy again. Yes, they do need to make adjustments and shave out spots for the flat area to grow. But not so much to make it sloppy. As far as I am concerned, it is much worse to have a band that is too tight and forcing the head to grow in the wrong areas, like upwards. Good luck to you. This must be very draining with two babies. It is funny how they grow to love their bands. Last night Sophie was drinking her bottle after a bath and the helmet was sitting next to her. She began to get sleepy. Then, she sat straight up, looked at me and did the sign for please while pointing to her helmet. I dutifully put the helmet back on and she peacefully snuggled down to finish her bottle. Who would have thought it could feel so good! Guest guest
Thank you all for your replies to my email about Cohen's helmet. I feel much better now. He seems to be doing fine. Tomorrow we're up to 4 hours at a time. Wish us luck! Guest guest
Thanks for the advice. I'll watch him closely and talk with the orthotist in detail on Tuesday. So, you taught your daughter to sign? I've considered that. My friend swears by it. The hard part is going to be convincing my husband to learn, too. What has your experience been like?
