Thanks for your tips Anne. You really have gotten involved with this.

I've printed out a few things but since we don't want to get prompt

dependent I'm afraid to do anything with her and am waiting for advice from

and Estelle. I've been warned to keep everything simple. I got this

other very cool program called Quick and Easy for the Home. Have you seen

this one? You might find it interesting.

We paid for the program. I talked it over with Joy and since we have had

to fight for everything I didn't wanted to complicate matters. You gotta

choose your battles and I this one didn't seem worth fighting for.

does have language so it is hard to justify why we need Boardmaker to them.

And this is all further complicated by us having a Mac. So between the

program and additional materials Mayer- is $700 richer this week.

Ugh.

I like the idea of making boards for special occasions like b'day

parties, Disneyworld , etc. I'm curious to how Sawtelle is going to react to

all of this -- they haven't been interested in using pecs with her because of

her language.

Anne I will call you once I understand how we are going to deal with

Boardmaker. It does look like fun. Have you gotten the program that speaks

the words on the computer? Not the augmentative device - I think the program

is called sentence maker.

<< Barb,

You're going to LOVE having Boardmaker at your finger tips. I followed

the tutorial disk which shows you how to make a board of any size. It was

soooo simple, I just dove in.

I made boards for all scenarios.....For example, Speech Therapy. I have

a board that I use when getting

ready to go to speech therapy....I made the board that sequences the

events...it shows getting dressed,

getting our coat on, car, and a speech therapist (I changed the name above

the picture from speech therapist to

her actual name).... I laminated it and now it's in a folder I keep handy.

Make them for Birthday parties, trips

to the mall, etc.

Our morning routine.....having breakfast...washing face & hands, brushing

teeth, getting dressed, backpack, bus

driver/bus....

Make sure you name and save them appropriately so you can recall/reprint

or modify without having to start all

over (I actually print the file name on the back of the board...i.e.

c:\boardmaker\speech).

I use boards with the icons in preparation of the augmentative

communication device (I'm still waiting for, though

I have gotten approval). It's teaching him to " touch " the picture. In

sessions and when appropriate, we still use a

PECS book which can carry alot of icons and he scans and selects them (i.e.

what do you want for dinner...he responds

by scanning the inventory of foods and actually picks what he

wants...remember to limit the food choices to what you have

in house....we've had a few frustrating moments when he picked something and

we didn't have anymore).

I label EVERYTHING.....and he's doing great with it. He's even

approximating " I want " verbally with the icon....it's

such a strong visual word reminder and for a non-verbal kid like

Chris...it's been very powerful.

Feel free to call me if you're having any problems and I'll walk thru

creating one....
