As you lose weight, you can expect your blood pressure to decline as well. My sister found that she was able to eliminate her blood pressure medicine as she lost weight. Be sure to have your doctor monitor your pressure so that he or she can adjust your dosage as needed along the way.

I just posted this on another thread, but my story started with my doctor

threatening to give me BP meds if my BP tested high one more time... and I

asked him for advice on losing weight (well aware that not BP meds only

buy me time and if I don't lose the weight I'll succumb to diabetes which

is all over my family tree) and he suggested Atkins.

It wasn't till a year and some later, and while I was " on a break " from

Atkins, that he had to give me BP meds. I went from 140/100 down to

120/80 in a matter of weeks.

(*)My anecdotal advice is not a substitute for getting your BP checked and

treated as necessary!

Hi Zena,

This is an article from the American Heart Association...lots of good

info about BP and others can be found here

" Under the stricter guidelines, a resting blood pressure reading

below 120/80 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) is considered " normal. "

If your resting blood pressure is consistently 140/90 mm Hg or

higher, you have high blood pressure. A reading in between these

levels places you in the prehypertensive category. Under the new

guidelines, a reading of 115/75 is the level above which your risk of

cardiovascular complications starts to increase.

The new prehypertensive category sets systolic pressure from 120 to

139 and diastolic pressure from 80 to 89 as a warning zone — time to

take action against increasing your risk for heart disease, stroke

and kidney disease. Consult your healthcare professional if you are

in the prehypertensive range and start managing your blood pressure

now. "

According to the American Heart Association web site: “The new

classification-”prehypertension”-describes people with blood pressures between

120-139 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) systolic (the top number in a blood

pressure reading) or 80-89mm Hg diastolic (bottom number).”.

Hope that helps.
