My husband is bi-polar and got extremely ill this year. We finally got insurance last week. I called to find out about our Psy. coverage. He must see a psychiatrist every few months and stay on meds the rest of his life. They said he has to spend $2,000 within the year before he can get a co-pay. And it starts again the next year. The same for me. A psychiatrist cost about $150 or more for one visit. We can't afford it. He (after nearly 2 yrs of begging and then almost committing suicide) sees someone at the VA hospital. They are all nuts over there themselves! It takes him hours of waiting to see someone and he has to hold down a job! We pay a small fee for care, such as it is. When will people learn that mental health is as critical as physical health. If he had a heart attack the insurance would understand that he can't work, needs help and gets attention. If his brain is attacked, so what? Why do you think so many people live in the street? They are not all drug addicts and alcoholics. There are a huge number of mental patients there and in jail. The health care industry in general is breaking down too. I can't believe that a child has to get tothe brink of suicide before the insurance, the mental health "system", and doctors get it togetherenough to try to help.
