Hi,

After reading the post on Miralax I am concerned. What do you use for

severe constipation? We used Milk of Magnesia and prunes for years.

That combination became ineffective. Then we used Benefiber. Before

that we used Metamucil. None of these worked for long. My daughter

gets so constipated that it will take several enemas to get a movement

going. She has had multiple tears and has developed hemmroids from

trying to pass large stools. Her family doctor prescribed the Miralax

and did not warn of any side effects. When she is in the hospital that

is what they gave her also. She has problems enough. If there is a

better alternative to the Miralax that does not have side effects I

would love to know about it.

Thanks, Shelby

Shelby,

My 11 year old son had problems for almost a year similiar to what you are

describing. That was almost 2 years ago. Even the lemon flavored laxative that

is supposed to be the sure fire cure did not help.

Then, I decided to take him to the doctor who diagnosed my sister and me with

MELAS. We did the blood test and in the mean time he we started him on Qgel.

Well, he is positive for MELAS and within a few days his constipation went away.

Now almost two years later the only time he has problems is when he goes to his

friends house or forgets to take the Qgel for a couple of days. I keep

reminding him but he sometimes says he does when he does not. Of course he is

learning that it does not pay.

Anyway, he takes the Carniqgel which has 30 mg qgel which is supposed to be

equal to 90 mg regular Q10 and 250 mg carnitor by sigma tau. He takes 3 gel

caps a day which is about 1/2 of what he is supposed to take but it is working

so I am not pushing it right now.

Anyway, if she is not on the Qgel I would maybe talk to your doctor about trying

it. You can get a small bottle I think for around $22. Call up and ask for the

mito discount.

Also, you did not say how old your daughter is, but the carnqgel also has like

75 or 150 iu vitamin E in it. The bottle is downstairs and I am very tired--but

Dr Tick said that is not too much at all. In fact, it helps my sons face which

I can also tell if he has been taking the gels. If he does not for a couple of

days these little pimples are all over his cheeks. Otherwise his face is

smooth.

Within a day after he starts up again he is fine again--no stomach problems and

no little pimples.

I, too, use the Q-gel. When I got it to the level I am at, my constipation

of 50 years went away. I had tried everything before that with minimal if

any help.

I hope you can find a solution for your daughter. Being constipated is one

of the most uncomfortable things I have had to deal with. It just makes you

feel yucky.

I take Zelnorm on a regular basis. It helps me very well. I also have to drink

lots of water during the day.

-Hi, I take the zelnorm also- three tabs a day. I am mainly taking it

for my gastroparesis, but it has had a great effect on the bowels. I

took metamucil and prunes for years but now no longer need them, Celia--
