Guest guest
I'm searching for someplace for my family and I to move. My sister has been offered a job in Conyer's, Georgia with her company. I know Shoffner is in Atlanta but I don't think I would really need to see him since I've already had a fresh muscle biopsy and see Dr. Cohen regularly. Does anyone know of just good PCP's in that area who at least know about mito or least would be willing to take orders from CCF? Thanks for insight again,
Guest guest
Dear , First, I am very sorry for all of the recent problems you have been having, and I am happy to see you well enough now to be posting about your experiences. I think that most people, especially physicians themselves, would agree that there is frequently a correllation between quality of physicians and teaching hospitals. The better the teaching hospital, the better the doctor. I have lived in five states, sometimes in rural areas, and have seen one small rural hospital that I would not take my dogs to! It often hinges on where the docs were trained. I have a good friend who trained as a surgeon at Yale, and then spent most of his professional life at the smallest hospital in Connecticut. He gave wonderful care, and I asked him to operate on my father. Emory in Atlanta has a very good reputation. The med school in Birmingham, AL, is top-rated. Many of the smaller hospitals in less-populated areas are often staffed by foreign doctors, trained abroad. Certainly not all med schools are equal, that's for sure. Having mito creates more of a problem for all of us here on this list. I keep saying that one of the main roles of the UMDF should be helping to create trained docs for mito. (Why not email the UMDF with your concerns, and even ask them to have this important topic in their newsletter?) One of the main problems we all have is finding a mito doc, or, failing that, finding a doctor who is intellectually curious, more generous with his/her time, and, yes, more compassionate. To the best of my knowledge, Shoffner only does the biopsies, and not follow-up care. Perhaps his office could give you a name, or fellow listmates could. These are all big decisions, and I hope you will have success! Sincerely,
