Guest guest
Sheila, You are so right to be concerned. It is an extremely risky surgery to say the least, and in my opinion not for a person who is in the 200's. At the weight I am currently, I would say that the risk would not outweigh the benefit. However there are many people in the 200's that have the surgery. I think it should only be considered if you are severely over weight as I was and only getting bigger, a BMI of 45 or higher mine was 72. They tell you up front that many people die from it due to complications. I had to go to a Psychiatrist the whole nine yards before I was even considered a candidate because the Mito added such a risk. I had to sign that I fully understood the risks that I was taking and in no way would hold the doctor responsible the whole thing. It took a while because of the Mito to even find a doctor who would consider me for the surgery, and only after they had talked at length with Cohen did my surgeon say OK. It is not anything anyone should do for cosmetic reasons at all! I am a firm believer in that for sure. It is far too invasive for that. But for the ones like me whose lives are in threat It is a life saver. The problem is too many docs see it as a money maker and are doing it on just about anyone who can afford to pay for it. As frustrated as I was with my insurance and the loops I had to jump through in order for them to cover it, I think it should be that way. Thanks for sharing your concern, it is a very valid one and one Mito must consider as a real possibility. I was very close to being a death statistic myself. big hugs to you, O When the door of happiness closes, another opens, but often times we spend so much time looking at the closed door, we don't see the open door. Look for the open doors!
Guest guest
Yes, and this makes me sick. My niece by marriage had the surgery at age 21 when only about 50 pounds overweight and then her mother had it when about 60 pounds overweight. They were lucky they didn't have problems, but I couldn't believe there was a doctor that would do it in their situations. They didn't even have any other health issues. I was shocked! I'm glad you are mostly well after the surgery and will be interested to see what Dr. Cohen says. I hope the kids turn around soon.
