The whole purpose of sugar control is to avoid the COMPLICATIONS caused by the swings. Rapid shifts from upper 300's to less that 65 is pathetic and you are recording all of these! He should be more concerned but I don't know that a GTT is the answer, is your son on insulin? I would agree that an endocrinologist or diabetes specialist is in order.
