Guest guest
I have a script for blood work for my son. He's having it in the morning. The dr. said she ordered FreeT3. I want to be sure it really is ordered. this is what is checked: T3, Total t3 UPtake T4,Free T4 Total TSH there isn't a place on there to check mark Free T3. if it isn't included in the t3uptake, I'll write in in on the bottom by the AM Cortisol. Thanks! Cris

Guest guest
That's what I was afraid of.... I'll just write it in on the bottom then! I wonder if drs. think it is included in those things, as my one doctor also told me she was running it (first visit to that dr. ) and it wasn't in it. They did it in their office, so I didn't see any paperwork to look at in that case. ANd - I think the freeT3 is the most important of them all.... sheese!! Thanks! Guest guest
OH MY! Look at what I found when I did a search for what t3 uptake was! and we wonder what the problem is? I never did find a good 'definition' either! Cris ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ T3 UPTAKE - serum -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The T3 uptake is used to calculate the free thyroxine index, which has been superseded by THYROXINE (FREE) . Guest guest
Most doctors do not know how to interpret the Free T3 test as when they went to school, it wasn;t even a test and many do not bother to update their education. Also many labs do not DO the free t3 testing, as I found out when I sent my cat's blood off for testing and they said they couldn;t even do the test at that lab, I suspect it may be the same for humans, but every time I have had it done it was written in as it is not a standard test MOST doctors order. *Artistic Grooming * Hurricane, WV Fat cat? Guest guest
Uh...your doctor is not bright. What she ordered is called a THYROID PANEL. Useless and outdated. Also, just checking the AM cortisol is highly inadequate. Your son could have a normal morning cortisol, and a too low afternoon cortisol, which won't be detected. He needs the 24 hour test, which would do 4 tests. ZRT labs has a saliva one without a prescription. Janie > I have a script for blood work for my son. Guest guest
the cortisol was written in too - but she was familiar with it. NOT that it is the best - cause it's a blood test, but she said morning for it. I can believe that they aren't familiar with it. ticks me off!! She sounded familiar with it when I spoke with her though!!! go figure! thanks! Cris Re: question - blood work ASAP please! Guest guest
and I asked for the brightest of his doctors!! Well - he's off of insurance as of the end of the year. Actually - he has insurance then, but with an enormous deductible, more for catastrophic things - That is the same cortisol that I had - I figured it was better than nothing. And I'm too cheap to pay for the one at ZRT labs - besides, it's like pulling teeth to get him to go for these tests!!! I know it would be a waste of money to for the one 4X/day. He'll be 23 in May. Knows everything, is ADD - and lazy - typical ADD - which, is why I want him tested. If he was staying on my insurance, I'd switch him to my doctor - but he isn't - so it seemed pointless, and they wouldn't know him. All I did for this was to call and talk to his dr. over the phone. It's the pediatrician he's seen since he was 5... They don't really deal that much, I wouldn't think with thyroid problems. At least not on a regular basis. Guest guest
The only tests that really are going to show anything is TSH, FreeT3 and FreeT4. Those uptake tests are USELESS, as well as plain T3 and plain T4. Your dr is running a typical thyroid Panel and if you can spell USELESS, that is exactly what they are. A waste of money. Guest guest
Hi Cris. Doing an adrenal test in the morning is inadequate. Yes, it could show " something " , but it might not!! The only way to really know if he has an adrenal problem is to do the 24 hour test, not simply a morning test. Don't feel the least guilty about writing in that free T3. It's HIS body, not the doc's. And......we've seen many a doc " say " they were doing the free T3, and did not! A DOC SHOULD NOT HAVE CONTROL OVER WHAT LABS WE WANT DONE!!! Janie > well - my son tried to get the bloodwork done yesterday around 10 am. they refused to do it. They said AM cortisol meant between 8 and 9 AM ! not 10 AM - well, we didn't get any sort of instructions like that - and my son isn't even normally up at that hour, as he works later and normally doesn't even go to bed until 4 am !!! so here is another form of 'normal' that doesn't fit the mold!! > now, today, the lab is closed. so - he has to go to bed sunday at 4 - and be up to get bloodwork at 8. and then - he won't get the results back in time to see the doctor while he still has insurance. He's 22 - but I feel like I should have been there to explain that to him, 10:00 am was like 6 am to us!! > I wrote in the freeT3. The doctor promised that she was running it anyway. I feel so guilty about it though. I should have taken it back to her office and had her write it in. That - would ahve let her know that I knew that she didn't order it, and maybe she would have been educated a little in the process! but, we didn't have time - I didn't think!! > Cris >
Guest guest
No, actually, on the negative side (again), I think that they think we're not smart enough to catch on. Guest guest
The lab was being quite sharp about the am cortisol, it should never be done but around 8 am, so that it will be accurate for what should be it's highest production of the day. Son is up til 4 am? Sounds like low in the morning, then struggling to get up there all day long, then finally up enough at night to keep him awake all night, UNLESS he's a night worker, of course.
