Guest guest
Hi, I had a large fibroid and was a bleeder, I had a myomectomy. UAE is another option. Check on anemia. This could be a real problem for you. Slow FE iron and vitamin C. Keep on top of it. Good info www.myomectomy.net Ku Rimmer wrote: I have a large fibroid and suffer heavy blleding every month, my GP suggests hysterectomy, but I am very nervous about it. Guest guest
Hi Val,You are right to be nervous about a Hysterectomy, there are many possible side effects of having a Hyst and personally i think it should be your last resort.Has your doctor told you about other alternatives?obviously not!First of all find out what type of fibroid you have and where it is located, what is large? some doctors will tell you that you have a " huge " fibroid when it is not really that large at all.Find out exactly how big it is,your ultrasound report should tell you all this information. Then there are your options -watch and wait -hysteroscopic resection -myomectomy -Uterine fibroid embolisation -hysterectomy type of fibroid, size and location will influence which treatment is the best for you.Do heaps of research on the net and make yourself familiar with all treatments before making your decision.Check the archives ...search 'Australia' and you will find other aussie ladies experiences and Dr's here that will offer you alternatives, there are mentions for Melbourne,Sydney,Perth and Brisbane.Hope this helps Sharon(Brisbane) > I have a large fibroid and suffer heavy blleding every month, my GP suggests hysterectomy, but I am very nervous about it. Guest guest
I'm in Australia too, Val - Adelaide to be exact. Where are you??? I had an abdominal myomectomy on Dec 4th to remove an 18x10x11cm fibroid. My symptoms were mainly long heavy periods with lots of revolting clots (about 2 weeks at a time) , pressure within my abdomin and uncomfortable sex...not to mention the pregnant-looking tummy. I knew about my fibroid for about six years before I dealt with it - it was 2cm when discovered, and grew steadily over time. When I finally asked my GP could something please be done about it, his reaction was REALLY inspiring... " Uh, it's a very messy procedure... there's a lot of blood involved...you'll probably end up with a hysterectomy " ......so I didn't follow that up for about 18 months! He didn't offer me a referral to a specialist or anything, so after thinking I didn't have many choices, I eventually changed GPs and found someone who admitted it wasn't his field of expertise and sent me to a specialist!! A myo was really all that was offered to me, but I know many of the women on this list have a lot of knowledge about other options. Because I'd like to have another child, a myo seemed like the best choice for me anyway, after learning as much as I could from lots of resources. I have been surprised by my post op recovery - I was in hospital for 5 days then had my mum stay to look after me for another week. The first two weeks post op were pretty awful, but then within about 4 days I was feeling great - just tired. (Until this week - but I think that's because I've perhaps been doing a bit much now I think I'm alright!) Anyway - ask more questions here - these women are a wealth of information. Good luck in your quest for knowledge, Val!!!! Donna
