My advice is 2/3 of the dose in the morning and 1/3 in the afternoon by 2:00. About 6 hrs. after the morning dose is what I do. Some people also need to add a little bit at night. Some people also multi dose more than this. But I would say the norm is two times a day. Don't take vitamins for a couple of hours. and calcium at least 4 hrs. from taking Armour. food in the tummy will mess with aborption, so eat 30 min to 1 hr. after taking. but sublingually is best. i would say the best thing to do is to have your husband's Free T3 and Free T4 levels checked to see what the actual thyroid hormone levels are - but a usual replacement dosage is said to be about 4 1/2 - 5 grains. Guest guest
Friends, I need your help in the most efficient way of taking Armour / Nature-Throid. I always thought my husband and I were ontop of things with our knowledge, but as I read these posts I see there are probably some things we could be doing to make our dosage more effective. We were aware of soy and calcium interferring, but would someone be so kind as to give me the ultimate protocol for taking these meds.(as far as what things to avoid, time of day, etc.) Plus some recommendations on dosage. My husband has had his thyroid lobes removed. When he first got his doctor to switch him to Armour he was all over the board with dosage. He leveled out at 1 1/2 grains one day and 2 grains on alternate days. The more I read the posts I think we should gradually increase him up...??? At one point his doctor had RXed 5 grains, but that was too much; however he had not worked up to that amount gradually...It was just " here try this dosage " !!(heart palpatations big time)I know he does not feel as well as he could. Just recently I have gotten him to divide his dosage 1/2AM, 1/2PM and we just started taking it sublingually since I have been reading these posts. Love the board and all the personal experience. Guest guest
WHOA!!!! In reference to that 5 grains that the doc gave a script for.....major gulp. Please note that when we took an informal poll here awhile back, most folks were on around 3 grains +-. Yes, there are few who are higher, but it's FEW. And nearly ALL built up to that!!! Yes, avoid calcium, iron and estrogen at the same time as swallowing Armour. What to increase him up to? It's all individual. Just hold each new dose at least 4-5 weeks from now on to give the T4 time to build and thus show it's conversion results to T3. I used to think that 2 1/4 grains was my optimal dose. But I had heard that before the TSH came into existence, the averate minimal dose was 3 grains and higher. hmmm. So, I started increasing, 1/4 grain at a time. And voila. I got up to 3 grains with NO symptoms of hyper. Yes, sublingual is an optimal way to take Armour (and naturethroid if you can stand the taste). I take 2 grains in the morning, one grain in the early afternoon, and another 1/4 grain at bedtime. (I am so optimal that I don't even notice a problem in the morning if I accidently fail to take my first dose until 11 p.m.) Hope that helps. Yes, we are all friends!! We all share the same disease, and we all support each other! ) Janie > Friends, I need your help in the most efficient way of taking > Armour / Nature-Throid.
