Guest guest
RE: Update from Cheryl in California You are it, the e-mail for the day.......as my hips don't tolerate sitting in this position for long....but you veterans are worth the challenge! I talked to my doc last Friday and he said that he got a notice from the FDA that they have " fast tracked " Malarone for approval in the US. Maybe this summer? I have heard of a girl in the UK looking for a doc................ The doctor who prescribed Malarone for me was not a lyme doctor, just a gp in Australia who usually prescribes it for travellers to malaria infested areas. In the UK an internist or tropical disease specialist can handle lyme because they have different orientations to those kinds of diseases than they do here. There that " class " of disease is not uncommon. If any body knows her ....she should find someone who has practiced in Germany, where there has been a lot of lyme. That's where my hometown doc got his experience. My doctor also has a license to prescribe in and practice in the UK , so she could write to him and maybe he could recommend someone there. Here is his e-mail: drbishop@... If anyone contacts her.......... tell the lady to say she is my personal friend and I recommended him to make a referral. The one course of malarone seem to take care of the chills and night sweats after about three weeks, even though I took it for only 3 days. The lyme, however, is quite intractable and progress is very slow. I had 50 days of 2gms. Rocephin along with 1000mgs. Flagyl daily. The lymph gland swelling and associated pain cleared up but the overall disability as in the fact that my hips, knees and ankles were still too affected for me to walk without a cane or wheelchair, did not. So I requested a change to Claforan (four weeks in addition) also because my gall bladder was acting up and I have a bleeding disorder so taking it out was not an option. I did go on a practically no fat diet with just small meals to handle the last fifteen days of the Rocephin and that worked but I lost 20 lbs and I was thin to begin with. I.V. Claforan was ordered at 12...yes 12 grams daily. Taken at 8 a.m. and then 12 hours later on three consecutive days of the week for one month. Every time I went in the pharmacists just about collapsed because they had never heard of anyone taking 6 grams at a time of any antibiotics. Everyone was watching me like I would drop dead or something. Anyway, I discontinued the Flagyl because the nausea was really way too intense along with the Claforan. W/o flagyl there was no nausea. Flagyl with Rocephin produced only a little nausea. I slept through the whole Claforan month. That was the only noticeable side effect. At the end of the month my blood panel was somewhat messed up with a very low neutrophil count......only about 1000, which is much like the count of a cancer chemotherapy patient or AIDS patient, so I was taken off ABX for two weeks and ordered to wear a mask and stay out of public places, etc. For one day I felt great and could walk without my cane......then the next week, completely forgetting that I had no ABX coverage, I walked for 30 minutes and that bounced me in bed for a week with some injury to my tendons and now I am completely stuck in the wheel chair. Obviously there has been some permanent damage but nobody wants to assess it for me. Go figure. That was one horribly painful lesson. When the docs said two to three years I guess they weren't kidding!!! Since treatment I had been just trying to negotiate the daily rigours of living. You know, getting up , eating, getting dressed and sleeping in between appointments since my budget can't handle home treatment and at least my insurance paid for some of the clinic stuff. At the moment I am on an IV break so I am resting a lot. I was surprised at how well the probiotics I was taking worked. They are Jarro-Dophilus and contain all 7 species of good intestinal bacteria. I never had one lower gi complaint whatsoever. I did have to take Diflucan for yeast but it was only 150 mgs. once a week so my liver panel always came out well. I am now on Flagyl alone and my white blood cells are already coming up very quickly. When they get as high as they were when we started Claforan I think we will do the Claforan again. I haven't had the time neither energy to post what with having to travel on the handicapped transportation system (time consuming) to all of those daily and nightly infusions. I haven't even updated my webpage. But, my friends did raise $8,700. for me , which allows me to make a reasonable monthly payment to the hospital clinic for the next two years until I can take over with payments from our general income. All in all with the many other diseases I have and especially the lupus, I am impressed at how well my body tolerated the treatments and the Herxes. I have no real complaints about any of them. Also the peculiar MS-like weakness and spasticity has improved as well. The heart arrythmias have also reduced down to almost nothing whereas they were recommending meds for that condition before this. Hope this helps someone. As I have always said: " Lyme is soooooooooooooooooooooooo persistant when it has attacked one's connective tissue. " It must love to live there. Coping with the wheelchair lifestyle in an upstairs apartment is no picnic...that is a given! Guest guest
I have a question..... I went to get the xrays today, and he set me up with an appt with a Rhuemotologist for tomorrow, he says he caught it early enough that the treatment shoudl work well with me but first they will do a special xray and inject somehthing into me to help protect my joints, since it was all in German I do nto haveany English names, but does this sound familiar to anyone and if so, can you tell me more about it? If so thanks inavance. Kitt
Guest guest
Can anyone tell me if they have heard of vaccines causing heart problems in babies? My friend has a 6 month old baby, and he was just diagnosed with a heart murmur which he WASNT born with. I know that they are very common, because my son has one, but i just think it is strange that all of a sudden this baby has one? I have researched a little on murmurs, and sometimes they can mean heart problems, serious ones. I read that environmental factors can cause heart problems and murmurs, so would vaccines be considered that? I just need to know if vaccines can cause heart problems in babies because my friend is in such denial about the vaccines in the first place. She doesnt believe they can cause serious harm to babies, even though i have shown her a pile of research i have printed that is 2 feet high! Any info on this would be appreciated. I also still have not vaccinated my 3 month old daughter, and dont plan on it. I havent gotten a call from her ped yet either. I figured she would of called to see why i am not bringing her in for shots. Hopefully she wont ever call and i hope Zayna doesnt get sick soon. I am still bf her so i hope that will help. I just wanted Sheri and to know this cause both of you have helped me so much. By the way, is there a certain amount of time that my baby shouldnt be around a baby that has just had shots? Can she get the diseases, or is it only the " live " ones she can get from another baby? I hope to hear from someone soon. My friend is sooooo scared about this heart murmur. Ronda *mom of bf unvaccinated Zayna (3 months old), and 5 yr. old Darren, unfortunately vaccinated OT Birth & Hep B -long Or, perhaps " guided " into a homebirth??? Katrina Actually,-originally we had planned on a homebirth. We took the Bradley Method classes (wonderful, I would recommend them no matter where you choose to give birth) My pregnancy was without a bit of trouble, we had a two midwives and they worked under an MD who also did not believe in intervention. When labor started I was thrilled! I had gone two weeks past the " official " due date, which we just mostly ignored. I stayed at home with labor that seemed to start every morning at four, and end around 2am. -That lasted four days, and each day of this I was checked over, and twice I went in for an ultrasound/non-stress test, to make sure our little sweetie was still doing okay(not running out of room, placenta growing too old to support him...) He was doing great, moving around maybe even Leaping around :~) Boy, they really hurt you a lot that last month ! But finally, I got so exhausted with the labor going on and on that the midwife asked me to come into the hospital where she had privileges...a woman's hospital, just for babies and women having surgeries for various female problems. She told me my husband could sleep there with me, and it looked like an ordinary living room with a great big bed in it. She said it would be good for my husband because then he could sleep, and her group could give me some support. So we packed up our " necessary food items " and left...We were figuring it might just be another two or three days of this, we were in touch with our Bradley instructor, and she said she had heard of women laboring for days, and gave us encouragement and her blessings to go to the Big H. <G> We got in, we signed papers, and yes I signed the Hep B. I had never thought to go against vaccines and remember even thinking that it was nice that they would give it to him here while it was convenient, no long drive to the dr. for it... After sleeping for a while, labor started up again, we walked, we showered, water finally broke and we were elated ! They rubbed my back, my husband fussed over me, I ate. Nothing out of the ordinary. They even bugged me about checking the baby's heart rate more than what I would have liked. I submitted to having a needle placed in my hand, just in case they should " have to " place an IV in it. I don't know if some of you have better hospitals that don't ask for that, but in this one they give an auto matic IV , or just a plain ol needle taped into your hand. But right after that I transitioned and it was time to bring out the Birthing Bar, and you know, I really liked using it, that baby was out in 22 minutes ! However, he was not breathing and he would not start breathing. So they suctioned him and massaged him and did everything they could think of. They brought a crash cart in and while they were squeezing air into him they shocked him. He still would not breathe, but his heart got going at least. He went into the NICU, and they put him on a ventilator. About four hours later, he began to breathe and they weaned him off the vent. They ran tests, and no-one could figure out what had happened to him. They gave him an MRI to check him over and he was fine. His heart rate had been monitored right up until his actual birth, so it was a real mystery. Then, in the night I was called out of bed --- he had had a seizure. I was really scared, his seizure lasted for seven minutes and they couldn't figure out what went wrong. Yep, that's where the Hep B came in. Some nurse on the night shift in the NICU decided to give him his shot. We did not know then what had happened. Months later, during my research I uncovered it. And the hospital apologized for giving it to him while he was ill. Apologized. Like I cared about THAT ! So anyways...The way I see it, they saved his life, then almost took it away again. Our midwife cried with me when it was over, she said she had been to literally hundreds of homebirths and she had never had this happen before. During the shocking of my baby the nurses were crying, and saying, " he's not going to make it " , while the dr's worked on him. And I believed it, I saw his body turn waxy blue and it was horrible. If we would have been at home, would have died. Sure, you could say that we could have hurried up and called 911, but you know what, it wouldn't have been fast enough for him to not have had brain damage. And 911 is too late sometimes anyway. Of course I am jealous everytime I read one of your beautiful birth stories, I wanted that too. When I hear that one of you are going to birth at home I say a quick, silent prayer for you that everything will go just the way you want it to, the way it should go. I believe that birth is a natural event and shouldn't be so tampered with, but I am also grateful for new technology that can save a life. That's what I meant about feeling " forced into a homebirth " . If I could be sure no-one would stick my baby with a shot then I would be fine utilizing a hospital. I could have declined it, it was my choice, and I was ignorant. Thinking about Robin's friend though...lurking in the nursery with a nice dose of poison is very scary. ~le Who is very glad to have a two year old to ignore while he runs around, trashing the house....while she writes long letters to her listmates. :~) [This message contained attachments] ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________
Guest guest
Chris; Even as a child, I was able to hold off OCD attacks (or even general OCD behaviors) for a certain length of time if the social situation required it (weddings, visiting relatives, etc.). Sometimes it was almost impossible to do, but at other times I could muster the control for a few hours at a time. After a certain period of time, though, it would break on through, often becoming more extreme for a day or two (like a pressure cooker blowing its lid). It could be that your son is just exercising a tremendous amount of self-control when his friend is over. If that is the case, it may require an extraordinary effort of will to do it. Does he seem tired afterwards, or does the frequency or intensity of his compulsions increase any? It is also quite possible that he's just having so much fun that he's able to ignore the obsessions and compulsions for awhile. I've found that during periods of excitement when the adrenaline and endorphins are rushing it's easier to resist compulsions. Maybe the fun distracts him from the compulsions enough to let him control them for a while. Many of us (OCD folks) are chemically driven to perform certain behaviors - the OCD is the slavedriver and the anxiety is the whip. A certain amount of " self-control " can be exercised to stop or moderate these behaviors, but (in my experience) that control comes with a price - more anxiety, depression, loss of energy, etc. I tend to exercise the control when I need to, but I know that I can't do it all the time. I pick my battles carefully and " pace myself, " so to speak. It could be that having that friend over and having a good " normal " time is a very important event for your son - he may have just made it one of his " battle " times. Keep in mind that I'm just speaking from my personal experience, though - your (or his) mileage may vary *G*. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------ Message: 11 Date: Thu, 22 Mar 2001 17:27:02 -0000 From: @... Subject: OCD - " gone " and back again! HOW does he do it?!?! I actually, sort of, understand 's OCD. And I know he does his best to control it at school and around others. And I know it will be worst at home. But HOW does he do it? He will OCD from the moment he wakes up until he goes to bed, I can see it all day, etc. I've let the twins ( and ) have a friend over for a few hours on a Sat/Sun, and have noticed that goes from room to room, standing up/sitting down, wash hands, etc., just fine when a friend is over (tho I can see the little hesitations). Then go back to OCDing when the friend has left. But I let them for the first time since our OCD adventure began, have a friend stay overnight. And again, managed fine the entire time. From after school, thru the evening, thru the next morning. Then their friend leaves at lunch and IMMEDIATELY he starts back. WHY???? in N.C. While is very quiet about many of her Os and Cs, this is an area we have been able to problem solve and have found some solutions that work for us. definitely has times where she cannot handle a long social interaction. You can see her anxiety compulsions (knuckle-cracking, etc.) start to pick up. Now that we know about the OCD, we have told her just to " signal " us when she needs to leave. Usually, she'll just catch my eye and mouth the words " Let's go. " or just give me the eye and I'll nod and move to end the visit as quickly as possible. For events which don't involve kids which she would be required to entertain, we find that inviting family and friends to our home allows her to participate as much or as little as she wants based on how she is feeling that day. She definitely enjoys her aunts, uncles and our adult friends since she has so few friends of her own. But she appreciates being able to " bow out " to her room when her " time limit " is up. Finally, we never accept an invitation or extend one that involves other kids unless we check with her to be sure she is " up " for it. If not, either my husband or I will attend alone. Hopefully, this will not always be the case, but for now with the depression/OCD still very out of control, these solutions work for us. To sum it up, we are trying to give her control, as you said , to pick her own " battles " . We are well aware that this is tremendously difficult for her to deal with day in and day out. Guest guest
Hi : You have done a wonderful job of explaining. Many of us have seen how our kids decompensate when they get home after a day of keeping it together at school, etc. At first when I did not understand this as how OCD works I would take it rather personally and be extra upset that my son was sooooooo much worse at home than elsewhere. He seemed to understand it from the get-go and would ask me to take him to Borders for distraction so he could avoid the worst of his OCD symptoms. Now he uses E & RP and manages amazingly well. He also had severe OCD (CY-BOCS =- 32/40) and MDD which leads him to become suicidal very fast when he is not on antidepressants. Thanks for your sharing, you are a gem to us all. Take care, aloha, Kathy (h) kathyh@... Guest guest
Hi! This is a follow-up to Maggie's points on data management and collection. Maggie this is a real challenge within Sure Start areas for all sorts of reasons some of which I have written about and are in the publication pipeline somewhere. However, I can say that normal levels of speech and language development and importantly PARENTS interpretation of the same is gathered using an assessment tool called the Sure Start Language Measure (SSLM). This is part of an audit/research project run by City University in conjunction with all of the Sure Start programmes that have to submit regular findings on this aspect as part of their monitoring system. It is not without challenge and requires immense effort on the part of those involved in Sure Start to complete. The work is labour intensive and provides very useful findings for programmes that have the interest and skill to use the data generated. More info on SSLM can be found on NESS website and also on the Sure Start website in the information bank. >From: >Reply- > >Subject: Digest Number 940 >Date: 21 May 2003 12:16:55 -0000 > > >

Guest guest
Hi Jerome, Glad you signed up for the Nucleus forum. It's a bit of work because you have to confirm each message that you sent, but they had a problem with people posting false messages. Most audiologists and hearing doctors want you to try hearing aids first before they will consider an implant. So you are on the right track. And if the fluid level in your ears was great enough to require tubing, then that could benefit you as well. NRT is built into all Cochlear Americas implants. Even my 6 1/2 year old Nucleus24 has NRT built in. You'd be getting the Nucleus 24 Contour, or even the contour with soft tip design, so the NRT technology is built in. Nucleus has started programming adults with NRT technology right off the bat because it saves time and gets a real good program to start with. Let me know if you have any questions. Nucleus Volunteer Subject: RE: Jerome Dear , Thanks for your reply. Those information you provided is valuable. I've just signed up in Cochlear's forum and still waiting for my pending membership. I'll be trying out some new aids probably after a few weeks after the tube in my myringotomy ear fall out. Then if nothing helps, then I'm going for CI. Would like to ask if the NRT thing is already available... Guest guest
- Correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding is the Nucleus 22 has not been upgraded to include the NRT. There are tens of thousands of Nucleus 22 users so you cannot say it is built into all Nucleus implants you know. And with the new Nucleus 4 coming out- wouldn't it be better to wait? It is a major upgrade! http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/03/09/1078594365280.html Why should he settle for old technology when a new one is around the corner? He could always check out AB's Clarion as well,(which is very current technology) or Med-El too. SnipeHunter
Guest guest
Yeah, too bad I don't know where to start... We don't have any CI center here I don't know where to begin, who will test my candidacy and so on... So far, my current move is to wait... Try new hearing aids first. Guest guest
I called a pharmacist I work with and she verified that a CII is good for 6 months. All controlled prescriptions are now tracked through the CURES system Controlled substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System. From what I gather the information is sent electronically to the DOJ. It seems the triplicates were changed to save time and the inconvenience of mailing in the multiple copies. See the website below. http://www.hospicepatients.org/narctripl.html Here is a link to FAQ about the new bill. http://www.pharmacy.ca.gov/consumers/prescribe_dispense.htm#moresb151 Jule Barta P.S. I teach full time but still work in the pharmacy about one day a month to try and keep up with the changes. I should be there more but I don't want to take hours away from the techs who need it. I do however WANT and NEED you to discuss further with your CA pharmacist about the specifics of CA law. I would like to also know what is the rationale for changing from triplicates to non-triplicates? I do not understand how the DOJ 'tracks' things now! If the original is not going to the DOJ how do they check or track problrems? OR are they now a skeleton crue that only responds to problems at the request of the courts, police, SBP?? I know in many sates that they have not had trips in a long time. So again how does DOJ 'track' this stuff or have they just STOPPED? and then if they have stopped why? Della any thoughts on this? Thanks Jeanetta
Guest guest
Thanks so much for ths wonderful link. I was going to spend lots of time going to the same CA site this coming weekend. But you beat me to the punch! Great !!! I loved reading about this. And I am now much better prepared for the change in curriculum. I made a copy of the Power Point presentation. I do not think the gov't would mind if I use it in my school but I do plan on asking for their permission. Sooooooooooooo much to digest right now as I am teaching retail module in the class. I will probably have some more questions of detail, you know fine tooth comb in nature, after I implement this. I will also place the powerpoint on this site for CA techs. Thanks again Jule! You savedme soooooooooo much time!
