Quicker Carpal Tunnel Help

CHICAGO (Ivanhoe Newswire) ... Mark Cohen, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon at

RUSH University Medical Center in Chicago. He performs a less-invasive

procedure for carpal tunnel.

³We¹re simply opening up the corner of the tunnel, " Dr. Cohen says. " That

decompresses the nerve and makes more room for the nerve as it travels

through the hands.²

Dr. Cohen uses special instruments to release the ligament, without having

to cut open the entire palm and wrist like standard surgery requires. A

smaller incision makes the procedure less invasive. It¹s also less painful

and allows for a quicker recovery. He says: ³The whole thing from the

beginning to the end is five to seven to 10 minutes. It¹s done as an

outpatient. They come in, and they go home.²

And according to Dr. Cohen, the procedure has up to a 98-percent success

rate. ³Quite frankly, the operation is relatively simple, easy and quick,

and they don¹t have much pain,² he says.

That¹s good news for Keller. She says: ³The pressure was off. What a

remarkable feeling. It was exhilarating, to be honest with you.² Lurch feels

the benefits, too. ³Just the look in his eyes! It makes him happy, and it

makes me happy,² Keller says.

After the surgery, patients are typically back to their daily activities

within a couple days. Dr. Cohen says surgery is only recommended for

patients with severe symptoms. Typically, patients are first treated with

arm braces, anti-inflammatory drugs, or cortisone shots before being

considered for surgery.
