Guest guest
Patti, I have been on both Fosamax and actonel. They give you the upset stomach, not the calcium or Vit D. If your stools are black you need to see the Dr tonight or tomorrow. Black stools usually mean blood from the stomach. Sincerely, S Actonel > Hi everyone -- > > I was wondering if anyone has had a similar reaction to Actonel (or Fosamax) -- > > I took my first tablet Sat AM and followed the directions to a tee re take only with water, nothing before and nothing after for at least 30 minutes, do not lay down, etc. About 1 pm I started having severe upper abdominal pain - could not stand up straight. Guest guest
Patti, Don't you have VEDS? I'd go to the ER now! Sincerely, S. Guest guest
Patti, I repied to your post twice but it hasn't shown up yet, if you are having black stools you need to go to the ER now! Black stools means bleeding from the stomach. You didn't take any pepto-bismal did you? It can cause black stools too. S.
Guest guest
Patti, Check out this link on side effects and drug interactions for Alendronate Sodium (Fosamax). http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/alendron_ad.htm > About 1 pm I started having severe upper abdominal pain - could not stand up straight. 6.6% of patients on Fosamax reported abdominal pain, compared to 4.8% on placebo. > Shortly after this began, I had a loose bowel and then two episodes of diarrhea 3.1% of patients on Fosamax reported diarrhea, compared to 1.8% on placebo. > She also had me start taking 1500mg of Calcium and 800 mg of Vitamin D Calcium products interfere with the absorption of Alendronate Sodium. You should wait at least 90 minutes between taking calcium and taking the Actonel tablets. > It couldn't be the Calcium, could it? The recommended daily allowance of vitamin D is only 400 mg per day. Excessive vitamin D can lead to excess calcium in the blood and uring and cause calcium deposits. Excess calcium can have side effects too. Excess calcium can lead to calcium deposits, nausea and vomiting. Excess calcium can also cause depression. My mother also experienced an allergic reaction to a mega-dose of calcium which caused her to have an axiety attack which required a shot of benadryl to treat. The best thing to do would be to talk to your doctor and to take your supplements and your medications at different times during the day. -Barb
Guest guest
Actonel Hi everyone -- I was wondering if anyone has had a similar reaction to Actonel (or Fosamax) -- I took my first tablet Sat AM and followed the directions to a tee re take only with water, nothing before and nothing after for at least 30 minutes, do not lay down, etc. About 1 pm I started having severe upper abdominal pain - could not stand up straight. Shortly after this began, I had a loose bowel and then two episodes of diarrhea --- all of which were black in color. I took two Imodium and this seemed to settle it down. This AM had another loose black bowel movement. Could this be due to the Actonel? Patti - I looked up your med at Medscape. This is what it says for side effects. More Frequent ABDOMINAL PAIN severe ARTHRALGIA DIARRHEA HEADACHE SKIN RASH severe Less Frequent AMBLYOPIA ASTHENIA BONE PAIN severe BRONCHITIS CHEST PAIN COLITIS severe CONSTIPATION DIZZINESS DRY EYES ERUCTATION severe FLU-LIKE SYMPTOMS LEG CRAMPS MYASTHENIA NAUSEA PERIPHERAL EDEMA SINUSITIS TINNITIS Rare or Very Rare IRITIS, ACUTE GI Effects. Adverse upper GI effects (e.g., dysphagia, esophagitis, esophageal or gastric ulcer) have been reported in patients receiving bisphosphonates. In clinical studies, the incidence of such adverse upper GI effects in patients receiving risedronate was similar to that in patients receiving placebo.Data from postmarketing surveillance indicate that adverse upper GI effects, some of which required hospitalization, have occurred, albeit rarely, in patients receiving risedronate sodium 5 mg daily. To minimize risks of adverse upper GI effects, patients should be advised to take risedronate with 180-240 mL of plain water and to avoid lying down for 30 minutes following administration of the drug. General Precautions Metabolic Effects. Hypocalcemia and other disturbances of bone and mineral metabolism must be corrected before risedronate therapy is initiated, and patients with osteoporosis or Paget's disease of bone should receive supplemental calcium and vitamin D if their daily dietary intake is inadequate. Endocrine Effects. Before initiating treatment with risedronate sodium in men and women receiving long-term corticosteroid therapy, sex hormones should be measured and replacement therapy considered, if appropriate. Specific Populations Common Adverse Effects Adverse effects occurring in more than 5% of patients receiving daily risedronate therapy include back, chestor abdominal pain, pain (unspecified),hypertension,flu-like syndrome, peripheral edema, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, arthralgia, joint disorder,epression,headache,dizziness,myalgia,rash,cataract,pharyngitis,rhinitis\ ,urinary tract infection, and infection (unspecified).Adverse effects occurring in more than 5% of patients receiving once-weekly risedronate include backor abdominal pain, pain (unspecified),hypertension, flu syndrome, infection (unspecified),accidental injury, overdose, nausea, constipation, dyspepsia, arthralgia, traumatic bone fracture, myalgia, headache, asthenia, and urinary tract infection.
