Guest guest Posted May 1, 2006 Report Posted May 1, 2006 Eunice, Happy 29th Anniversary to you and your husband. I know you have enjoyed your day.... inspire of your breakfast. Shelle Disappointing Breakfast Today was our 29th anniversary. Yes, I've been married to the same wonderful man for 29 years. We went to our favorite restaurant, on the Blue Ridge Parkway, for breakfast. We have been going to this restaurant even before we were married. We had not been for 2 or 3 years. Today was a disappointment. They offer a breakfast buffet, but most of the containers were empty. They did not have the nice selection they have had in the past. The quality and quantity of service have really gone down, but prices have gone up. They only had two waitresses working and I could tell they were overworked. Normally, I'm a positive person and would say that today was just a bad day, but I don't think that is the case. It was not as many people there as we have seen in the past. We still had a wonderful anniversary and we had a great dinner prepared by the best cook, my hubby. LOL hugs Eunice Quote
Guest guest Posted May 1, 2006 Report Posted May 1, 2006 I'm sorry you had a bad experience particularly on an important day like your 29th anniversary! Our first meal in America was somewhere in Wisconsin where we stopped for breakfast in a road house where the parking lot was full of giant trucks and even larger men, and women. The buffet bar was full of every food item you can imagine including fresh fruit and there was no limit to the number of times you could go and get a 'refill' although they insisted that you used a clean plate everytime. The coffee never stopped coming and the service was good natured and quick. Maybe our English accents had something to do with that. The bill came to a measly $9 USD, cheap by our standards and I left a good tip before we left replete to go on our way and unable to eat anything else until the evening. What did all that do to my BG control, don't ask!!??** But it taught me a lesson about eating habits in the US and the sort of portions that you're expected to consume or take away. I like eating, don't we all, but trying to control diabetes in the face of this temptation can be daunting. I hope that your next experience of eating out on your next anniversary will be a better one. Take care. Barry UK Disappointing Breakfast > Today was our 29th anniversary. There had been a change in management a couple years ago. I wasn't looking for lots of food. In fact, I used the fruit plate which is smaller, but there wasn't a good choice of fruit. There was something missing but it did not spoil our day. We started talking about our trip we made in 1998 to Alaska and the restaurant we went to for brunch before our flight home. Now, I want to go back to Alaska. LOL (Do we have any members from Fairbanks, Alaska in the group?) Hubby and I go to buffet type restaurants at least once a month. I have no problem going to them, I know how much food I can eat. I have complete control when it comes to food. As I've said before, I cannot gain back any weight that I lost over 5 years ago. Hubby does not care how many clothes I buy, but he has told me that I cannot buy a larger size than I'm now wearing. I'll not gain any weight back, winters would be too cold to go without clothes. LOL hugs Eunice - I eat to live, not live to eat Quote

Guest guest Posted May 1, 2006 Report Posted May 1, 2006 Hi Barry, I am an emigrant from Europe and I have been living in Canada for forty years. I remember going to a buffet all you can eat place in California around 1990. I could not believe that a restaurant could make a profit serving such an abundance of food so I asked my husband who is an executive to explain the economics of this. He said that the most expensive cost of running a restaurant is the building and wages. People like a bargain so that is why they go to a buffet. Just remember you don't have to try everything that's available. There is always tomorrow! Happy May 1st, le Quote
Guest guest Posted May 1, 2006 Report Posted May 1, 2006 Hey! We in the US don't all eat at buffets all the time!!! I personally don't like them b/c sometimes the food is cold or yucky looking..plus the thought of other people probably touching it. Yuck. Guest guest Posted May 1, 2006 Report Posted May 1, 2006 Hi Eunice, I am glad that you enjoyed your anniversary even though the breakfast buffet was disappointing. May you have another 29 plus years together. Yesterday was also our anniversary 12 yrs for us and I had been in bed with an earache. But managed to get doctor myself to go to dinner as I knew I must eat. It was pleasant but nothing different did not feel up the much better style of restaurant this time around. Hugs (IN) Quote
Guest guest Posted May 1, 2006 Report Posted May 1, 2006 We sometimes go out for Sunday lunch to Indian restaurant where they have a buffet and it's very enjoyable although I have to watch what I eat otherwise my BG result goes off the meter. Before we left America for home the last time we were there I said to our host that I couldn't possibly leave without having a genuine American hamburger. So we were taken to a well known hamburger joint (can't remember the name now) and I ordered what I thought would be a reasonable meal. When the hamburger arrived I just sat and looked at it in astonishment for quite a long time. It covered the whole plate and then some and that was without the fries and salad which arrived separately. Then I learnt what a 'doggy bag' was for!! But I cheated and didn't test myself before or after the meal, simply shot what I thought would be enough insulin to cover it. Seemed to work because I'm still here but not to be recommended. I have a stepdaughter affectionately called Barbie who's an Emergency Nurse Practitioner. She can recall some amazing anecdotes of people rescued from near death having suffered a severe 'hypo' because no one around them knew they were diabetic and didn't recognise the symptoms. There's a moral in there somewhere. Take care. Barry UK RE: Disappointing Breakfast > Hey! We in the US don't all eat at buffets all the time!!! Hi , Happy belated anniversary to you and your hubby. May you have many, many more. Sorry you were sick but now you have next year to look forward to. Maybe you and your hubby can go out this weekend to a nice restaurant. It is ok to celebrate an anniversary a week late. hugs Eunice Quote

Hi Jan, It wasn't just about the food, I could be happy eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, especially with hubby. Something about the whole restaurant was different. noticed it immediately as he walked in. Life is too short to let something like that bother me. hugs Eunice - who has lunch dates with hubby every Tuesday and Friday Quote
Guest guest Posted May 2, 2006 Report Posted May 2, 2006 Same here - the only time I really eat at a Buffet is on vacation to Reno or Las Vegas - it is the cheapest way to eat there sometimes. But if I can talk my DH out of it, we eat at a " regular " restaurant. The whole idea of the " sneeze shield " just doesn't appeal to me! Guest guest Posted May 2, 2006 Report Posted May 2, 2006 I think the key is that just because it's there doesn't mean you have to eat it. Resturants find that the most efficient way to feed a big crowd quickly is buffet style. The clean plate each time is a health code rule that is suposed to protect us from cross contamination and germ spreading. We (Americans) aren't really a stereo type. We aren't all really " dirty Americans " . We really do have individual brains and many of us actually do use them. I think the friendly service you received is the usual. I find people treat you the way you treat them. Yall were polite and nice, so you were treated in kind. My in-laws travel alot in an RV. They agree busy truck stops end up being great places to eat. -Sunny --- Barry wrote: > I'm sorry you had a bad experience particularly on > an important day like > your 29th anniversary!
