It is pretty amazing that someone who doesn't speak (and I am assuming here

doesn't read it either) the language could have a valid drivers license. Of

course I realize that there are plenty who don't have the license and are

driving

without it.

> Oh good. I hope that's the case. She is working so hard to make

the payments for the car and the insurance. She's just a restaurant

hostess, so all her $ pretty much goes to the car. She didn't do

anything wrong, so I hope her insurance won't go up.

Your comment about being 17 and auto insurance brought back a memory

for me.

I was a bit older than that (20 or 21) and living in Portland Oregon

at the time. One morning the neighbor kid and I took off and drove

south to McMinnville to go golfing. Just as we pulled into

Mcminnvile, I glanced to the right to point out where the local

Oregon State Police car normally sat with his radar to catch drivers

who hadn't slowed down soon enough.

Well, he wasn't there at the time, but in that split second, the car

ahead of me came to a dead stop in the middle of the road to make a

left turn across a double yellow line ... into his insurance agent's

office ... who just happened to be standing on the sidewalk at the

time ... and who witnessed me rear-ending his insured.

Fortunately, no one was injured, but it totalled my car and did a

fair amount of damage to the car I hit.

About the time I confirmed that no one was hurt, here comes the

Oregon State Police car. I explained just exactly what happened and

why, and freely acknowledged being at fault. The conversation then

went like this.

Me: " What really upsets me is that I have never had an accident or

a ticket, but being a single male driver under 25, my insurance

rates are probably going to go through the roof. "

OSP: " I know what you mean. I finally turned 25 last month and got

that crap behind me. "

At this point, another cop car pulled up. Only this one was being

driven by the Chief of Police of McMinnville. I can assure you, one

of my all time " Oh S*** " moments was when he walked up to the driver

of the car I rear-ended and said " You OK ? " He then walked

back to where OSP and I were standing. The conversation took a

decidedly interesting turn at that point.

MCofP: " Okay, boy, I'll take over. " (By boy, he meant OSP.)

OSP: " No, sir, I have it under control. "

MCofP: " This is my town. I said will take over. "

OSP: " And I said I had it under control. I was first on scene. "

MCofP: " Doesn't matter whether you were first or not - I'm taking

over. "

OSP: " Yes, it does matter. And one more word out of your mouth and

you're going to jail for interfering with a police officer in the

performance of his duty. "

MCofP: " What! "

OSP: " That was your last free one. One more word and you're under

arrest. "

MCofP: " sputter, sputter, sputter "

OSP: " Just one more... "

OSP then marched me to the rear of my car and very quietly (below

ear shot of MCofP) said " Do you have a check book? "

Me: " Yes. "

OSP: " When you get home, write a check for the bail amount and mail

it in. Do NOT appear in court - just forfeit the bail. "

He then glanced back at MCofP, shook his head, and muttered " What a

jerk. "

The ticket? Violation of Basic Rule, which simply means " following

too close for the conditions at the time. " There are squares to

check for " Just Missed or Hit " a " Vehicle, Pedestrian or Object. "

None of them were checked.

Needless to say, I never again golfed at that particular course. In

fact, I was much, much older before I ever again went anywhere near

McMinnville. It may be rare, but every once in a while you do win

one.
