Thank you Mike,

I think your response is right on. Mine is also the last molar on the upper

right side too! I am terrified of the Dentist. I f I have options, I believe

I'll just have it pulled. It's just so soon after shoulder surgery. Half the old

tooth is gone. When you make yout trip around the country, could you please add

me to you list of stopovers if possible. I live in Arlington, Va. About 100

miles from in Richmond,Va. Is ther much bleeding from this extraction?

Thanks so much, Sincerely, S.

Re: My tooth broke, any suugesstions with extractions and EDS?

Hello I posted last night, no responses. I have to have the rest of

my molar tooth pulled tommorrow, it fractured in half Friday night

on a steak and cheese sub! I haven't had a tooth pulled since baby

teeth! Do I need to be on an antiobiotic? Will they put in stitches?

I'm not a tooth nurse, I haven't been through this before. I 'm more

scared of the dentist than all the surgeries on my joints! Anyone

with EDS had a tooth pulled before? And how they felt afterwards?

Thankyou, S.

Sorry about not replying on this yesterday, it was one I meant to

and missed.

Yes, I have EDS and Yes, I have had teeth pulled before - more than

I like thinking about. The most recent one was only about a year

ago.

Circumstances were pretty much just as you described. I believe you

said you had previously had a root canal done but no crown because

of the expense factor.

Same thing with mine. I had had a root canal and filling done

several years ago. I don't remember what I was eating, but I was

suddenly chewing on more than food. I couldn't get an appointment

for close to a week. But since there was no longer a root, there

was no pain with it.

Also because there was no root, he didn't even really need to deaden

the mouth. He did use one of those local swabs just to keep from

feeling any irritation with the tooth next to it. But the actual

extraction was very simple, very quick.

The only reason you might need an antibiotic would be if there were

an excessive chance of getting an infection, but this would not be

the case with just a simple extraction. And yes, the liklihood is

that you will get one or two stitches. If yours does the same as

mine, you won't even have to go in later to have them removed. They

biodegrade in about a week.

The big question for any follow up work is the location. On my last

extraction, it was the last tooth on the right, upper jaw. There

were no other teeth behind it (thanks to previous extractions), so I

didn't have any issues of a gap betwen teeth. If you will, he will

probably discuss a partial plate.

All in all, it was no big deal and there wasn't any discomfort

afterwards. The only " adjustment " was having to retrain my chewing

muscles to compensate for the missing tooth. You can relax and not

panic about it - it is not a major procedure.

The only other question I would have is that you said it fractured

in half and you are going to have it extracted. Usually, if there

is that much tooth left, they can put a crown on it. Mine was down

to the 20-30% left range and it was a toss-up. A crown probably

would have lasted for a couple of years and then needed pulling

anyway. It would not have been a long-term solution. I elected for

a $100 one time to have it pulled instead of $1000-1500 for a crown

followed by the $100 down the road anyway.
