I like many of you am on oxycontin and have been on it for a few years now but

for me it has been good and I'm not worried. Lately there has been a lot of

backlash about oxycontin. My mother who is a Customs Superintendent says it is

one of the big drugs now and all these shows talk about people being addicted to

it. They chew it, melt it down and shoot it up. I think when they have these

shows they forget about people like us who use it just to get our pain level

down a bit. When I started using it I was lectured over and over about how

dangerous it was to chew. I was also told it was not meant to take away my pain

but to make my everyday level more tolerable. I actually e-mail I think it was

the Walsh Show (which is the only talk show I watch) after they aired a

program about addiction and oxycontin came up and I told them they were

forgetting to tell people that there are people who need this drug and use it

properlly. I saw that that episode was just aired again last week. Right now

it seems to be the perscrition drug along with percocet and vicodin to say how

evil they are. I believe that should remind people that using these when you

live with chronic pain is totally different.

Great point

Oxycontin has been a Godsend for me. Over the last 3 1/2 years I have

been able to titrate my daily dose down as I began to feel better, but have

terrific doctors who know I won't take more than I need. People who have

never had the anguish of chronic pain have not a clue about how we must

spend each moment of our lives, and if oxy is taken as is prescribed then it

is a safe and wonderful medication.

We all need to step up and teach (if you are strong enough) when we

hear people parroting misinformation...kind of like those urban legends,

isn't it? Others don't need to know what meds we personally take, but we can

use the " I researched this when I kept hearing how terrible it is..... "

Did you get any response from the Walsh Show?

Thanks,

Sue J.
