Hi Becca,

Stress can cause higher numbers. I proved that to myself yesterday when I

was trying to find out if and when meds would be shipped.

Also, there is nothing wrong with getting a second opinion. Sometimes we

need to make a " clean sweep " . A doctor that has not seen you prior may see

immediately what is causing your high numbers. If you are comfortable with

seeing another doctor, go for it.

Let us know what you decide to do.

Hi there. My name is Becca. I posted my intro a while back.. But real quick I am

a 33 yr old sahm to 9 children in TX. Type 2 since last March. I currently see

an Internist for my Diabetes. She started me on a good diet (mostly low carb)

and Metformin at the beginning. I did great for several months. Well I am not

doing so great anymore. Before I was diagnosed I had boils come out of nowhere.

They went away with the meds and diet changes. Now I have a boil again on my

face of all places... It is going away now. Dr. says it is from too much sugar

in my blood. Well let me tell you I NEVER eat wrong. I dont cheat EVER. I am

very strict on my diet. She added Avandia (avandamet). That didnt help either.

So now she has added Glyburide. I am still at 200 fasting glucose and still peak

to 300 or more at times after meals. I have gone as high as 600 and a visit to

the emergency room. I am so frustrated with all the med changes and it NOT

working. I walk about 30-45 minutes a day for excersize not to mention chasing

after these 9 kidos. (they ALL live with us) My stress level is high of course

but should it affect my sugar level this much? I was doing so good at first. I

didnt change anything!! My A1c level was down to 5.7 and now it is back up to

8.1!! It has been bad since September 05. I have asked the dr about going on

Lantus and she firmly says no. That I dont need it. That I need to get more

control.. HOW???? No one is telling me! I typically eat 45 carbs per meal and

have one snack. My snack is usually tuna and whole wheat crackers or sugar free

(no sugar alcohol) jello or something like that. She recommended these to me! I

dont eat anything with sugar in it. I know the tricks about sugar alcohols

(kinda...but i stay away) and low fat and no sugar added!! So I stay away from

those. I dont eat high sugar fruits or veggies. What more can I do?? I think I

might need a new dr. I hate to say that but seriously I think I do. What do you

all think? Any advice???

Thanks in advance,

Becca~

Maybe you can't tolerate 45 carbs at a time. They told me 30 carbs per meal,

well, after much testing, I can NOT have that many! I eat 300 calories, yes,

CALORIES per meal, and 3 snacks of 100 calories each. I also balance out carbs

in each snack. !/2 the snack comes from carbs, 1/2 from protein.

Meals vary, but I try to stay at about 15 for breakfast, 30 for supper and 30

for lunch. Less is better for me.

You need to figure out portions. I thought I ate well. NOPE. I ate LOTS, haha.

A big salad with lots of vegs, etc. Well, that last time I ever ate a big old

salad I was 282 2 hrs later. NEVER again. I learned how to measure out a small

amount of lettuce, add some protein, some CarbWell dressing, very little, and a

few vegs. You will just have to keep trying.

I tell myself, at 59, I want to watch my grandsons graduate. I need eyesight in

order to do that. And I want to dance at their weddings. I will need all my

toes. I don't want to be on dialysis 3 x a wk like my dad, he has no quality of

life. You should see the food restictoins when your kidneys start to fail!

I am really new to diabetes but I am testing 4 to 6 times a day to find out

what causes my BG to rise and spike and what doesn't. And I agree with what

others have said about going really low carb --- - as long as I keep my

carbs under 20 for a meal, I do fine. More than that and I tend to spike up to

200 BG. Bread really spikes me - even whole wheat. Cereal of any kind does

too. I haven't tried kiwi but I do OK with a small serving of strawberries.

This is a strange disease because we are all so different and what works for

one doesn't work for someone else

45 carbs per meal sounds like allot. and what types of carbs are you

eating??? whole grain ones seem to be better for us. The glucose they

produce seems to be released slower into the blood, and the fiber helps to

keep your body heathy.

You always have the right to a second opinion! It sounds as though you

may want to look into getting into a diabetes specialist...

Adding insulin can cause weight gain, because the body will be better able

to use and store the glucose in the blood.

I would recomend cutting back on your grain and potato carbs. Eat more

veggies. Raw veggies. Lean protiens.

Have you looked at the south beach diet??? its great for diabetics.

(though, not one diet is perfect for everyone)

Angelia in OR also a stay at home mom, but only of two... one six and one

three months...

How old are your kids?

As for squabbling, that is what siblings do. As long as there's no

actual bloodshed, I'd suggest standing back and letting them work it

out.

Re: ** I am so frustrated**

I don't know how to curb the stress level. We have a lot of kidos. I am

concerned with their safety, always working on projects for school or

homework with them, the mountains of housework and laundry. Just day to

day stuff.. Not to mention the fact that my biggest stress factor with

raising so many kids is that they don't always get along. It makes me

nuts when they argue and fight. They are really good kids but in those

moments I get way too stressed out. Maybe my body will adjust to it. My

husband is good about letting me go get some alone time in my room or

whatever... No win situation...

Hi Angelina!!

45 carbs is what the nutritionist told me to eat. So maybe that is my problem..

Too many carbs. I have done a lot of research and there is so much confusion as

to who should do what, etc... UGH! Too many opinions out there! I wish it was

just a 'normal' disease.... lol.. Oh well. Anyway the carbs I eat are supposed

to be the healthy ones. I dont eat the fruits and veggies that I am not supposed

to (bananas, oranges, carrots, sweet peas, potatoes, corn, etc....) On occassion

I will eat potatoes but not often. I eat oatmeal (not the instant kind) and

berries and kiwi.... broccoli, green veggies, and whole wheat pasta and brown or

wild rice. As far as my bread goes I eat the sugar free from Nature's Own. Yet I

still get high readings. I havent had a sugar dessert in almost a year AT ALL!!

If something has sugar in it I stay away from it, unless it cant be helped (like

with the bread.. 2 sugars). Even with bread I rarely eat it. I am really

wondering if I am producing any insulin at all. I just bought the South Beach

book! I keep hearing about that. It's just about what I have been doing

anyway... Thank you for responding...

Just to add another point of view:

I was told 45 grams per meal on the carbs. Since I did not know about

high/low gylcemic or anything else, I ate 45 grams per meal. I soon found out

that I could not have any type of bread, pasta, rice, etc. It really upset me

at first. I tested before every meal and 2 hours after every meal for 3

months so that I would better understand what was happening with the diabetes.

Now, I test 2 hours after 2 or 3 meals each day. I have since learned about

the GI. For low gylcemic foods and after some weight lose and exercise, I

can safely eat 45 grams - especially if they are low GI. I can also eat

Basmati rice, low carb pasta, and even a slice of bread or small serving of

potatoes.

The key for me (and I know that everyone is different) has been exercise,

portion control, and weight loss.

Angelia,

You say that 45 carbs at a meal sounds like too much. I was told 45-60 per

meal and 15-23 per snack.

Hi Angelina,

For really good control, some people eat 45 grams in an entire day, as you have

heard. Nutritionists are notorious for telling us to eat wayyyyy too many

carbs. Oatmeal is high GI - most people can't eat oatmeal AT ALL. I used to

have a huge bowl every morning with honey every single day the year prior to my

dx and I miss it terribly but it definitely is not possible for most. Kiwi is

high GI I believe so go easy on that. Cold cereal will spike most people. Bread

- even 100% whole wheat is still about 15 carbs per slice depending on brand and

some will spike from that (I do). Stay away from pasta -even whole wheat and

dreamfields supposedly net 5 carbs will spike many of us - rice is high GI -

even brown rice.

Some on this list will say they can eat the above foods and maybe you can but if

you really want to lower your numbers, you need to go low carb and get control,

then you can add in some of the items that you may possible be able to eat (and

test after to see).

Doing these things will greatly help reduce your numbers, and of course

exercise.

Go for eggs, low fat cheese, meats, nuts, low fat/low carb yogurt.

Remember - check CARBS on the label not so much sugars as sugars are calculated

into the carbs.

Angelia,

You say that 45 carbs at a meal sounds like too much. I was told 45-60 per meal

and 15-23 per snack. I don't usually get that much at a meal. Is the 45-60

high for most people with diabetes? The diabetes nurse seems to follow a lot of

the research that is going on (GI and such considered, unlike a friend of mine's

Dr).

I did talk to another friend yesterday and she says she stays at 15-30 a day

most of the time. That seems really low to me.
