This is major surgery and not to be taken lightly. I think everybody is scared to some degree. I was a wreck the week leading up to surgery. Dont worry its normal. Guest guest Posted October 16, 2006 Report Posted October 16, 2006 Yeah, North Carolina! , which doctor are you going to? I live in Asheville but I'm going to Dr. Bauman in Concord. I don't think Concord is too far from you, just the other side of Charlotte from Gastonia. I'm in Asheville, but the horrible doctors here won't operate on anyone over 400 lbs. I just love Dr. B! It's quite a drive, but at this point I don't care. I also looked in to going to Hickory, which would have been a little closed to Asheville, but I liked Dr. B's practice better. Great to see some other Carolina Girls on here now! I'm fairly new and have mainly just been lurking, but I've learned so much from reading all the posts. Tonya 457/437/?/199 Quote

Guest guest Posted October 18, 2006 Report Posted October 18, 2006 , When you where looking for a Center of Excellence did you look into Pinehurst? Just wondering what qualifies a Center of Excellence. Thanks Iceis LadyTonya@... wrote: , I actually had to travel to Concord because the surgeons here in Asheville don't do anyone over 400 lbs. I was drawn to him because he only does WLS. The doctors here in Asheville work at WNC Surgical Associates and they do other lap surgeries. Only thing Dr. B does is RNY and lap band. He is awesome! I was looking for a Center of Excellence and the two closest ones to Asheville were Hickory or Concord. I actually looked at Durham, too, but that was just a little too far to drive. I had a little trouble with my upper GI. First, the girl came out and asked me how much I weighed. She said the weight limit on the table was 350. She disappeared for a while and I thought I was doomed. She came back and said that they could do it, just had to do something to the table first. I didn't have any trouble. I lay down on the table very gingerly. It didn't move, they just moved the x-ray machine over me. It was actually really cool because I could see the barium going down and in to my stomach. I have an appointment to meet with the nutritionist at my surgeon's office next week and that's the last thing to do before submitting to insurance and getting a date. I can't wait! Guest guest Posted October 18, 2006 Report Posted October 18, 2006 I wonder why more places can't do that barium swallow w/ the patient standing up? You'd think if it was a place w/ a lot of wls patients they would be able to accomodate a heavier weight w/ the table or do it standing up. Guest guest Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 Iceis, My pcp actually had to find a surgeon that would work with my bmi. The only one he found was the one at Duke, but I'm quite happy with them. I know they are a center of excellence. I'm not exactly sure what the criteria for a center of excellence is. Check it out at www.wls.com. That is where I get quite a bit of my information. , When you where looking for a Center of Excellence did you look into Pinehurst? Guest guest Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 Tonya, Way to go. I'm very excited for you. I also started out a little over 440, but I'm down to a little over 400. My only problem now, other than waiting for insurance approval is that my thyroid panel came back wrong and my synthroid had to be adjusted. I have to have my pcp do the bloodwork again in 2 months and fax the results to the surgeon. You've got me wondering why the doctor didn't send me to Concord...it would have been alot easier. Good luck with getting your date. , I actually had to travel to Concord because the surgeons here in Asheville don't do anyone over 400 lbs. I actually started this journey over a year ago.
