You know...the talk of invisible disabilities, along with my continued

impatience with a huge problem in Houston with handicapped parking

violations...gave

me an idea that I might actually try. When a car with no permit parks in a

handicapped space in front of me, take the positive approach, and I mean,

sincerely: " Boy, I can sympathize with you. As someone with an invisible

disability

myself, I know how difficult it can be. I hope your day goes easily. "

called it the Miss Manners approach. Is it too aggressive? The trick,

of course, is to actually mean it. Which is a trick, on me, because then my

mind has to find a way to believe they're justified, and in essence, forgive

them for it...hmm.

Considering your past experiences with dangerous jerks who abuse this

privilege, this is certainly safer for you than confronting them. I would

hope that in some cases, the offending person would be struck by guilt. I

doubt it will work all the time, but perhaps one person out of 100 might be

moved to do the right thing the next time he/she wants to go into a store

for " just 5 minutes. " If nothing else, it may help you cope better with

your own frustrations about the problem.
