Guest guest
My daughter has been on the ketogenic diet for exactly a year. Two weeks ago, she had an episode of asthma and her appetite decreased. She was on a short course of prednisone and asthma improved and got better pretty quickly. She still was not eating much and had reduced her calories by half (700 cals vs. 1200 cals) and as a result has lost 2 lbs. We tested her blood ketones a week ago and she is at 12 (normal levels are around 5-7). I have been giving her juice to try and breakup her ketones so she can get her appetite back. She has had about 2-4 ounces of juice for the past 4 days and she still will not eat. She has not eaten anything solid for a week but has been drinking all her keto formula (ross carb free soy, polycose, and microlipids), which we reduced from 4:1 to 3.5:1 ratio. For the first time since she was about five months, my daughter is seizure free these past two weeks. Obviously, the high level of ketosis is giving her full seizure control (she used to have 15-20 drops a day). I am very worried about her growth and nutrition and am wondering if any of you have any suggestion on how to bring her ketone level lower. I am considering having IV glucose given to her this monday if her ketones ar still very high. By the was, her co2 & glucose level are fine, so she her acidosis level is normal. Please let me know if you have and suggestions or have had this experience. Nunu
