Guest guest
I'm so sorry that she is that sick. It's so hard when something like this happens. used to get pneumonia back to back when he was younger. He went 7 days with a fever of 104-105 without a break. The wonderful military hospital didn't admitt him though. They did determine that he had asthma and gave him singulair. I don't know if it is any connections but he didnt' start the seizures until he got on the singulair. Just be careful!! I hope you and your family are feeling better soon. We've got colds going around here too!! Take care!! ~Jake's mom --- kristansmommy skkahalma@...> wrote: > Hi all, we just got back from the hospital > yesterday. Guest guest
Hi Satnam, know that one - too is prone to bronchial pneumonia, also resp distress etc following on from a cold. He got given a diagnosis of 'bronchial asthma' at age 3 (just before the seizures started actually...), ie - no signs at all seen usually, but when he gets a cold/virus it often goes straight to his chest and we have to start him on regular ventolin to keep resp distress at bay till all signs of the cold have gone. Anyways....after the last nasty episode a few months ago (oxgen level kept dropping, 4 hrly ventolin wasn't working at keeping stats above 90%), we gave in (and I use those words cos I just didn't want another regular medication added with him) and started him on a steroid inhaler (beclazone in his case) that I am now pretty pleased about. He has had 2 colds since then and we haven't had to use ventolin once. The steroid inhaler basically strengthens the lungs so that when he gets a resp infection, either he has no need for the ventolin, or if he does, it kicks in a lot quicker and more effectively. We plan to keep him on it (1 puff morn and night) till about November (Spring has just started down here), and then restart it midway through next Autumn. Not sure if this would be beneficial to or not, but thought I'd mention what has worked so far down here - touching wood 'cos he has a nasty cold right now, so we have gone to 4 puffs of the steroid to cover him thru this patch. Ear infection and conjunctivitis with this one, sigh - so antibiotics and medicated eye drops started today as well.... PS - Asthma on hubby's side here too, but like , bronchial asthma only, which hubby 'grew out of' at about age 18. ----- Original Message ----- From: kristansmommy Hi all, we just got back from the hospital yesterday. Kristan started off with a cold on Thursday and then it developed into pneumonia and an ear infection. Antibiotics were started but her breathing got worse, so we took her to emerg Saturday afternoon and they determined it was bronchial pneumonia, admitted her for 24 hours and now we are using an inhaler with an aerochamber to help clear up her lungs. Poor kid is doing better now. They don't know if it's asthma yet, it does run on my husband's side, but if this happens again when she gets a cold, then it will probably be asthma. This is the last thing she needs on top of the seizures. Even though she is ill and I hadn't checked her ketones for a couple of days as I was just so concerned with keeping her hydrated, the seizures have pretty much stayed away except for a few. I checked her ketones yesterday afternoon and it was at extra large (16) immediately, first time, but today she's back down to moderate (4) and so far so good, no seizures. Her breathing seems to be improving, we use the inhaler every four hours, but sometimes it gets a bit worse. Getting her to take the bottle is a bit of a struggle right now, poor thing is having trouble breathing, how can we expect her to drink anything, but eventually we get it into her. My husband and I and my parents also have caught her cold, but we are all on the mend. Here's hoping the seizures stay away. Guest guest
, That sounds like Wyaema in April when we spent a couple of days in the hospital. The doctors sent us home with a nebulizer. It seems that whenever the weather changes, like cold to hot or visversa or it gets rainy her breathing gets bad. If we give a a few breathing treatments it usually gets it under control. We were told that that should prevent bronchitis or phenumonia from coming back. I wonder if she has asthma? We are doing pretty good. She has been going all day without seizures and then may have a few at night. We started the lamictal last wee, so we are on week two.It will take 3 months before we are completley on it. Eye doctor said she can see fine, so we do not know if there is an neuro problem processing what she sees. We are finally gaining weight, ................ yeah we are at 18 pounds. Well I email you later. Kristi Mann, Mom to Wyaema, 23 months, Keto Kid from March 2003 - January 2004, Still having Seizures Kristi Mann Smile make everyone wonder what your thinking May God Bless you today, tomorrow and always
Guest guest
If 's nose gets too congested he often doesn't want to eat, but we usually deal to that with pediatric (Otrivine) nose drops. During the day not so much of a problem, but he often needs them at night time to let him sleep properly. Not so far with this current one mind you, but I have some ready and waiting in case. I guess if Kristan is in recovery mode she may have simply lost her appetite, keeping fluids going if poss is important, but hard to do I know, if they are just not interested is doing ok, but he will be staying home from school for the next 2 days, so boredom will probably be the main problem.... His ketones this morn were the lowest I have seen them in months, just registered a '4-6' on the urine ketone sticks but I think that will be from raised bloodsugar from the infection. With all the eye drops etc he is having to endure (hates them) I am not keen on fingerprick testing though, so I'll just assume that is why (his antibiotics are carb free) and plod on.... ----- Original Message ----- From: kristansmommy Hi , palmocourt (sp?) which is a steroid was also used on Kristan at the hospital, but they decided she did not need it anymore when she was discharged. Her breathing sounds better, and I hardly hear the wheezing (sp?). She is stuffed up, runny nose. Did lose his appetite too when he had the bronchial pneumonia? Kristan has only had 3 oz of her formula today. She has had one wet diaper from the night and 3 bowel movements today, and she doesn't look dehyrdrated, she's just content sitting and doing nothing. She takes a few sucks from the bottle here and there but has no interest. Thanks for the info, I hope gets better from his cold soon. Guest guest
Don't forget to give good bacteria; acidopholus or yoghurt for a couple of days after the antibiotics to regenerate the digestive system. I believe that this disruption could possibly affect the diet and ketones. Also the much lower activity with sickness could affect the production of ketones.
