I hope you understand what I am saying, but I really don't think the maintenance guy has a say about this and maybe he was just saying that not many things get to be done, period. What I would consider doing is going to a person who can approve of such a change. I would actually even put it in writing, explaining why you are requesting this. I don't know who that would be in your work of place but it is something worth finding out. You won't know until you ask. If the maintenance guy gets an order from his superiors to put a plastic cover on the fixture in your class, then he has to do it. You can actually ask him who you should send this request to the next time you see him. I hope you do try this. If you are sensitive to the light it would mean a lot to your health.
