Guest guest
For about 2 months Shan's seizure activity has increased. Where she use to go anywhere from 2 to 4 to 6 weeks without a tonic clonic seizure in her sleep she has been having 1 every 2-3 days. We have been tweeking the diet. After running out of ideas on what could possibly be the cause, we decided to make a major change and put her back on a 2:1 ratio and make her diet more like the ketogenic. She has been on a 1:1 ratio with high protein and carbs around 20g (Atkins). At this time we decided to start monitoring her blood sugars more closely. Prior to making the ratio/protein/carb change her blood sugars were in the mid 80's. After the change her blood sugars were 71-74 in the morning. She went 4 nights without a seizure. The morning of the night that she had the seizure her BS was 81. The next morning it was 76. Last night (2 nights later after the last seizure) she had another seizure and her BS at the time was 91. This morning her BS was 94. Monitoring Blood sugars and making diet adjustments according to Blood sugars is new to me. We have always watched the ketones in the urine. Prior to making the ratio change her ketones have been moderate to large in the evening. Since the ratio change they have been steadily increasing. Last night they were an easy 160 (blackened easy). I'm going to do some research in the keto archives on this topic, but anyone wishing to share their ideas I would welcome them. Shan has done well on the diet but 2 months ago the seizures suddenly increased. She had been slowly gaining weight over the 2 years on the diet so we were not sure if that was the problem. Also, I was making adjustments in her diet in regard to making her diet low salicylate to help control impulsiveness (changed source of fat). Over the past 6 weeks we have given back most of her calories and went back to the fats that she was using. She's not fat but according to the growth chart her height is less than 5% and her weight is 15-20%....so she's a little over in regard to weight. Recent lab work shows that all is normal (except cholesterol) including the carnitine.
