Guest guest
You could test his urine with multistix to make sure it isn't blood (if blood does show on on the home test strips the usual advice is to take that same sample to a lab for confirmation). We have seen this a couple of times in too, and his was not blood. Like Bill said, it was more like sand, a reddy brown sediment. We were told to increase fluids, and were told it cculd be a pre-cursor to kidney stones too. It never developed into anything like that here though, and the last bit I saw was over2 yrs ago now, ----- Original Message ----- From: allan banks hi everyone, since starting the keto diet 12 months ago, our son , matthew often has a brown stain in the front of his nappy (diaper). it looks like diarhea but definately comes from the front. we told the neuro who said that he would have to see it (pretty hard when it never seems to happen around appointments and he is not close by). he thought it could be blood in urine but i don't think so. sometimes he can go for 2 weeks and not have it, sometimes have it 3 days in a row. we can't connect it to anything. has anyone had this problem? thanks, andrea, mum to matthew - 17, keto since nov 03, drug free. Guest guest
No, of course you don't sound silly, how would you know about these things when you have never had to worry about it before Multistix check a range of things, one of which is whether there is any blood in the urine (so a kidney stone 'alert' sign to watch for is a positive test for blood in the urine, usually in conjunction with protein also showing as positive on the mutistix). The part on the mutistix checking for blood changes color if some is present in the urine, on our ones here - small speckles of green ranging to solid blocks, depending on how prevalent it is. Usually after 2 consecutive positive tests, one of the samples is taken to a lab to confirm, but like and others on here, we have had a positive test show at home here, did another test for the lab to check it with their equipment, and it came up negative, so we always make sure now that it is one of the original samples that has showed positive on the multistix that we take. We use the Bayer '9' multistix, but I think there are other brands out there as well. They check for things like protein in the urine, blood, leucoytes, nitrite, (both of those check for infection) specific gravity, (level of hydration), urine ph level, bilirubin, glucose spilling over into urine (never had a positive reading of that one) and of course ketones - though I don't like the multstix ketone test personally, it never seems to correlate with a single ketostick used at the same time. ----- Original Message ----- From: allan banks . susan, hope i don't sound too silly but i'm not sure how you check for blood with multistix, what shows up? thanks , andrea. Guest guest
where do you get your multistix? I live in the Dallas TX area and went to 4 different " chain " pharmacies on Sunday but no one carries these. Do you have to order them? Thanks! Guest guest
You know the keto diastix, if I remember correctly, measure both blood and sugar in the urine. They cost moe than the plain ketone stix and there is no need to be checking for sugar in the urine on the diet. That is for diabetics. Now personally I recommend the multistix cuz they tell you so much more but if a person was going to stick with just the keto stix I would avoid the keto diastix, just wasting some money allan banks wrote: > susan, > oh i get it now, we use the keto diastix. i think i > saw the ones you are talking about in the hospital but > didn't know you could buy them. thanks for clearing > that up. sometimes i think the keto team should supply > us with all this equipment seeing we do all the > monitoring! cheers , andrea. > --- Oldham burninfences@...> wrote: > > > where do you get your multistix? Guest guest
Wierd world huh? Well its the mulistix that can be really pricey. You can get them with different number, like 8,9 and 10. The higher the number, the more things they measure and the more they cost. I always found the 8s gave me everything I needed for the diet, although for a while I couldn't get them and had to to go the 10s allan banks wrote: > michelle, > don't ask me why but the diastix are cheaper here in > australia than the plain ketostix. we have a > pharmaceutical benefits scheme here which i qualify > for because i am matthews' carer. i get 100 (bayer > brand) for $3.80 so i was shocked when i read that > someone said they paid $100! i will find out about the > multistix. thanks. andrea > --- mmc@... wrote: > > > You know the keto diastix, if I remember correctly, > > measure both blood > > and sugar in the urine. Guest guest
A lot of folks on here seem to get the mutistix on script, no can do here in New Zealand though, (living here btw, I don't think I can be much help in accessing them) we have to pay for them ourselves. As has been so well controlled this yr, we haven't used them that often, but I think testing at least once a week is a good idea if possible. ----- Original Message ----- From: allan banks susan, oh i get it now, we use the keto diastix. i think i saw the ones you are talking about in the hospital but didn't know you could buy them. thanks for clearing that up. sometimes i think the keto team should supply us with all this equipment seeing we do all the monitoring! cheers , andrea. --- Oldham burninfences@...> wrote: > where do you get your multistix?
