Amazing! I saw MU fans and thought ?Marshall? - it can't be! I grew up

in Huntington and my husband graduated from Marshall! I went to

undergrad in the southern part of the state - Concord College. We live

in New Hampshire now.

Welcome - I'm Barbara, mom of two boys, both are deaf. Tom is 13 and

Sam is 11 - they both have cochlear implants. it feels so strange to

say that - Sam just had his surgery about 2 weeks ago and was just

activated yesterday.

There are a bunch of parents on this list with kids with LVAS so you'll

get lots of good information. I'm glad you're here!

Take care

Barbara

Hi Tammy,

I¹m and I live in Athens in Southeast Ohio. My 9 month old son sees

an ENT at Cincinnati Children¹s named Dr. Ellis Arjmand. We have only seen

him 3 times but have been thoroughly impressed with his professionalism,

intelligence, and experience. He even called our home to see how my husband

and I were doing after giving us some bad news on one visit. I know it¹s not

much closer to you than Columbus, but we have been told by numerous folks

here at Ohio University that the best pediatric ENT¹s and audiologists in

Ohio are at Cincinnati Children¹s.

Can¹t help you with your other questions though :-)

Tammy,

HI, I can't answer your questions but I wanted to share a little information

with you. We are actually in ton SC, and our girls go to MUSC. We where

very blessed when we moved here 11 years ago that Dr. Weber was the ENT at

MUSC. Both of our daughters have LVAS and he had much knowledge on the subject.

He has published some on LVAS in the medical field. He did both the girls

cochlear implants, in 1999. He has moved now and is at Clevland Clinic. Just

thought I might tell you about him as he might be able to help you locate

someone in your area that has knowledge on LVAS. I would also like to say that

the program at MUSC is wonderful. Although I have not personally meet DR.

Lambert, I do hear very good things about him.

Newbie with questions

Hi everyone. Newbie to this group and was referred here by someone

from the LVAS yahoo group.

My name is Tammy. I live in ton, West Virginia. I have a 10

year old son with Bilat LVAS - mild to moderate loss but fluctuates

down quite often.

For a quick summary ....... We discovered in Kindergarten he had a

very mild loss. We had his hearing tested every 6 months and there

was never a change, thus not much concern. When he was in 3rd grade,

all of a sudden it dropped drastically. Within a two day period, it

had fluctuated quite a bit which put up a red flag for us and his ENT.

We had extensive blood work done, CT scan and an MRI. NOBODY could

see anything wrong. My ENT made an appt with Dr. Lambert in

ton, SC at MUSC (4 hrs away from us). He took one look at the

scans and caught it right off. We know of NO other people in our area

or even close that has LVAS and our ENT even admits he doesnt know

much about it, nor does any others in the area that I can find. What

we know about LVAS, we have basically learned on our own. The

Audiologists in our ENTs office are somewhat familiar with LVAS and

they have worked with us very closely and have been absolutely great!

(our son) now wears hearing aids when in classroom settings and

occasionally at other times. He also has an FM system that is

occasionally used. Recently his hearing dropped for no apparent

reason and his audiogram bone test vs' the headphone test (not sure of

the actual names) had a huge gap. He had a small amount of fluid so

we thought antibotics would fix that problem. NOT! We ended up

putting him on steriods, which did get his hearing back up to where it

should be and the two in sync again. Our ENT has mentioned possibly

some sort of bone inflammation since the steriods helped and wants to

consult with Dr. Lambert at MUSC again. I assume we may be making

another trip there in the near future.

Few questions for all of you if you dont mind ...

1. Does anyone know of or had problems with ear bone inflammation?

What is that??? I know steriods is supposed to help different hearing

loss problems but not sure which ones or how/why. Can anyone offer

any suggestions or insight?

2. I noticed in the last daily digest that a couple of you had went

to MUSC. Who did you see there (Dr and Audiologist)? Does anyone

know Dr. Lambert? Thoughts?

3. Is there anyone in this group familiar with any of the ENT's at

Ohio State University? I have been given the following names if I

decide to go for a second opinion ... Dr. Arrick Forrest, Dr. Ian

Grant, & Dr. Dave . Anyone heard of any of them? OSU is also 3

hours away but I have a sister living there so it wouldnt be so bad.

4. Is there any ENT's or otherwise that anyone knows about that is

closer to ton, WV that I could see for a second opinion.

Preferably familiar and up to date on LVAS.

5. Is there anyone close to the ton, WV area in this group?

Would love to hear from you.

Thanks all for any insight you can offer on the above.

Hi, Tammy,

We live in Savannah, GA but go to MUSC in ton every few

months to see an Auditory-Verbal therapist, Nevitte Swink, who is

wonderful. When we were preparing to move from Boston to Savannah,

our ENT at Children's Hospital in Boston was familiar with Dr.

Lambert and encouraged us to see him if need be. So far, we've been

happy with the ENT here in Savannah, so we have not used him yet.

As for the (pediatric) audiologist at MUSC, Snyder, we have

not see her yet, but are scheduled to in a few weeks -- we have one

locally here, but I've heard wonderful things about and am

eager to meet with her. I can let you know how it goes.
