Guest guest Posted July 23, 2006 Report Posted July 23, 2006 The SF Bay Area continues this crazy heat wave. We had a temp of 118 yesterday in my backyard. It was still 101 degrees at 8:15 last night. I don't feel like cooking. I don't want to even consider looking at my oven, let alone turning it on. Same goes for the grill and the stove. I have passes to the local water park, but the place is so full even at opening (think line around the building) that I can't take my nieces. I went running this morning at 7 and I still managed to get overheated. Yes, I'm drinking tons of water - about 1.5 gallons. Any great food ideas that don't require heat? Haha...other than going out or yet another salad? Don't laugh but I ended up eating chips and salsa for dinner last night! Stay cool y'all! Carla Quote

If you can manage to turn on the stove, quesadillas (corn tortillas, of course) might be nice and quick. Just get all the fillings ready so that you're not standing over the range too long. Later, when it cools off slightly, perhaps you can make gazpacho or another cold soup to keep in the fridge. You can also make cucumber soup, blueberry soup, or a big ol' tinkyada pasta salad. Taboulleh made with quinoa? ygg Quote

I usually marinade the chicken in something and it cooks in about 5 minutes. My other favorite thing is humus and veggies. MIchelle >Any great food ideas that don't require heat? Guest guest Posted July 23, 2006 Report Posted July 23, 2006 You can also use the Foreman grill for Quesadillas as well! I'm the only one GF in my house, so we have two. One standard for DH and the kids and one where the plates come off to go into the dishwasher! No more worries for me! Guest guest Posted July 25, 2006 Report Posted July 25, 2006 Ditto! I moved yesterday and it was 110! We were so excited that we had hired movers for the first time ever. ) But I have been at a total loss as to food ideas. Like Carla, I'm so tired of salads! I dragged out the crockpot this morning and did chicken with salsa - I'll shred it tonight with either rice or corn tortillas. And the LO can be used for ... you guessed it ... salad! LOL! P.S. Did I also mention we spent some time in a motel because our house was 95F INSIDE at 10 pm Saturday night? Maureen Quote

Guest guest Posted July 25, 2006 Report Posted July 25, 2006 We have been doing tons of smoothies with homemade yogurt, and whatever fruit I have on hand. We had one for lunch yesterday, as none of us were very hungry. Hey Maureen....our house only got to 91 inside. Chilly! We went to a hotel Sunday night. I know people don't feel that sorry for those of us in the Bay Area, since our weather is usually very mild. Because of this, a lot of people (including us) don't have air conditioning. We have had 10 days with temps above 90 and a few days in the 100's. HELP! Amy in very sunny Sunnyvale, CA Re: Hot Weather Food Ideas >> The SF Bay Area continues this crazy heat wave. Guest guest Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 How about a cold rice noodle peanut salad? Some rice noodles can be microwaved, if you really want to avoid turning on the stove- but either way you can mix up a tasty peanut sauce and chop some fresh veggies to taste. Or, there's always rice paper spring rolls with sauce. Mmm! > > The SF Bay Area continues this crazy heat wave. We had a temp of 118 > yesterday in my backyard. Guest guest Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 Could you give more info on the rice paper spring rolls? It sounds like something I'd love. Where do you get the rice paper? What do you put in them? Any special way they should be prepared? Also, what do you use to make a peanut sauce? Thanks so much, Laurie " seamaiden399 " seamaiden399@...> wrote: >How about a cold rice noodle peanut salad? Guest guest Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 I, too, would love to know how to use the rice paper for the spring rolls. I saw them at Whole Foods and at Wegman's near the Asian foods. I don't know if anyone else carries them. These are larger than the wheat and gluten won ton papers... and my understanding is that you cook them differently. I SO very much want to try the rice spring roll paper... Thanks for advice!!!-- Carol M HeppnerUpdated website: www.carolheppner.comNew Paper Arts Book: INKING by Carol Heppner (Sterling/Chapelle) 2006 Quote
