really great

L-carnosine

Has anyone heard of this or had an experience w/ this protein??

A local NBC affiliate aired this story yesterday!!!

http://www.wnbc.com/drdavidmarks/1715238/detail.html

Here is an excerpt from the story/article.....

" " " and Jane have been taking a synthetic version of a

natural protein called l-carnosine. Their pediatric neurologist, Dr.

Chez, of Lake Bluff, has recently completed the first study

of the substance.

It affected language, receptive language, eye contact, communication,

all of which are things which children with autism have big gaps

with, " Chez said.

Over an eight-week period, Chez's study showed that carnosine

improved behavior and communication by 16 percent. Social interaction

improved by 27 percent and, in just four weeks, parents reported an

overall improvement that more than doubled through the length of the

study.

Lites said that more and more research shows that the frontal lobes

and the temporal lobes in the brain control emotion, epileptic

activity, cognitive, expressive speech, and abstract thinking.

Chez said I-carnozine apparently works in the front part of the

brain. So far, he said he's used it on about 1,000 children, with a

90 percent success rate.

On some children, the change has been dramatic. " " " " "

I had heard about carnosine on an apraxia list. I recently ordered it but we

haven't started it yet. I tried to find some of the posts about it but so far I

haven't. I can at least point you to the apraxia web site and the info on

carnosine.

Margaret,

I started on carnosine, but on a really small dose because she seems to

react to much less of things than the " therapeutic dose. " I haven't seen a

change yet either, but I'm planning on slowly upping the dose. I'm not sure how

it specifically affects speech - here's a quote form the original article - " It

affected language, receptive language, eye contact, communication, all of which

are things which children with autism have big gaps

with, " Chez said. " I'll let you know if I see any change if you'll let me know

likewise.

Has anyone heard of or tried a supplement called L-Carnosine, which is

reputed to help symptoms of autistic spectrum disorder? About a month

ago, I read a post from someone on another support group who had great

success with it. I did a websearch and found some press releases

detailing promising research results.

Dear Theresa,

L-carnitine is a substance that the body produces to break down fats

and fatty acids. There are some people that do not produce enough in

their bodies and need to take a supplement. This can be easily

diagnosed by getting a blood test for carnitine level. Our dd saw a

pediatric gastroenterologist for a variety of things and in part of

his evaluation, he checked her carnitine level, which was normal. He

said that had it not been normal that he would have started her on a

supplement, which would not " cure " her AS but may have improved some

of the undesirable moods that she has. Hope that this is helpful.

Take care.

Hi Lydia:

The supplement is L-Carnosine which is different than L-Carnitine. I

didn't want anyone reading this to be confused. I ordered some already

(L-Carnosine). I'll let everyone know whether I see improvements.

I use Carnosine from www.lef.org, 1 capsule twice a day. Look on their

site for a writeup of the benefits.

Hi All,

I am using L-Carnosine as a way of reducing some of the

factors

that cause aging or disease damaging of various celular systems. I hope

it

works. I am taking 500mg /day of Source Naturals product. It is supposed

to reduce glycation, the harmful crosslinking of various tissues in the

body

which is supposed to cause aging damage. I am taking it on a theoretical

basis and have not noticed anything yet. I've been taking it for about

a

month.

Take Care All,

Mike

you can get it at www.iherb.com (phone 1-888-792-0028) or www.puritan.com

(phone 1-800-645-1030). They are about $10 for 30 capsules 500 mg or $30

for 90 capsules for 500 mg.

Not with speech, but one of my kids had an improvement in behavior for the time

I used it. I stopped it when his behavior remained

good even without it. This took about 3-4 months.

Not Dana, but the best supplement we used was Carnitine.

The best intervention was FastForWord.

You can look at my list of supplements I used for my son

http://www.danasview.net/chel6380.htm

Basically what recovered my son was ALA chelation for food issues and did help

with language and a few other things. Before ALA, I

gave enzymes and still had to remove luteins, artificials, and a few other

things.

High dose vitamin A protocol [with one extra] was the " final kick " . Several

supplements [see above page] were also helpful.

I use an ABA/AVB/DTT approach to education, which works well for my kids.

For my #3, carnosine made him more cooperative.

Carnitine did not have an effect on either of my kids, but they don't have low

muscle tone.

I have been giving CarnAware to my son for several months now and have seen

a lot of improvement in his speech (he had none before, just signs). Each

capsule of CarnAware has 200 mg of L-carnosine. I started with 2 capsules a

day and after a couple months increased to 3 capsules a day. Dr. Chez, who

created CarnAware, said I could increase up to 4 capsules a day as long as

there were no side effects. He said the main side effect would be poor

sleep. I did stop using it for a few weeks when my son was sleeping very

poorly. It seems to have just been a phase for him, as we restarted the

CarnAware and haven't had the disturbed sleep again. The website for

CarnAware is www.carn-aware.com. Hope that helps a little.
