Guest guest
Dear After a couple of months on lower ratios (down to 2:1) 's mental state got squirrelly, she was always hungry and obsessed with food, and finally had a huge breakout of seizuring this past week. She doesn't do great with high ketones, but these lower ones are just as bad, I think, on her. If you think could tolerate a higher ratio, for his sake, maybe you should try one. I have at 2.5:1 and am considering 3:1, knowing it is easier to bring the ketones down than to get them up. Apple slices / apple juice will get them down without a huge calorie swing for the day. Just an idea, as you are getting started, and it is so much easier if you start right than to try to right everything later. . Guest guest
, That is something we are considering. I must tell you that we realized (thanks to this list) that we were doing the mealplanner wrong. Way wrong. I feel like such a failure because the last year was on the keto diet on the 2:1 ratio, we were using the mealplanner wrong. Which meant that he was getting inconsistent ratios and calories. It somewhat explains the random seizure control he was having. I feel so foolish and stupid. Now that we have things figured out with the mealplanner, we are going to give it a try on this ratio and then move up if needed. He has had 2 sz free days so we'll just have to see. gets highly ketotic and acidic. He was on the 4:1 ratio twice and ended up dehydrated and in the ER. It was our neuros decision to lower the ratio and it worked. What is confusing is how did he have seizure control for almost 2 years with the inconsistencies in his meals??? Big question. Another issue that we have is that is low average in IQ so he knows his letters numbers etc and is verbal but his motor skills and social/emotional skills are more like a 3 year old and will probably stay that way. This makes for a very strong willed, frustrated and stubborn child that we have to be very careful to get him on this diet at all. With all of those things to consider, we are very cautiously going up on ratio. His seizures have reduced since we started the diet and now that the meal planner is correct we're going to give it some time. I have to say that he is very moody and attention is very poor on this ratio so far. Time will tell. We are meeting with 2 dieticians locally this THursday to consider for the diet. I am so sorry to hear about . This disease can be so hard on not only the kids but as the parents. It is so difficult to do this diet and then if they are hungry or grouchy it just makes things worse. I hope you can find the answers you are looking for. Where are you from? Thanks for your input and I'll keep you posted on the fine tuning. HUGS to you
Guest guest
Dear Two days seizure free is nothing to sniff at! What a great start, and good to know how to rightly use the planner. , too, had an incident with acidosis, so that is why I so loved the lower ratios for her, but it simply wasn't doing what it needed to do, and when the seizures began I felt like we are back to " square one. " How discouraging. I am reading the book, AGAIN. It is helping me, and is very encouraging reading. is pulling out of the mess, but she will be down for a week and is wetting herself and doing all sorts of behaviors that say she is not feeling good. Hate those seizures. We are now doing 3:1 and I am holding fast for a couple of weeks to see how it goes. In the book it clearly says that the ketones must be between 80 & 160 to do the job. So, we will go for it! The lower ones finally caught up with her, so we have skipped right back up and are starting over, so to speak. We are from northern Michigan... the land of snow, snow and more snow. Actually, lower northern Michigan, which isn't nearly the snow of the Upper Peninsula! But, it is already here! The moods came with the lower ratios for . And they worsened until the ratio started up... now, except she is feeling rough, she is seeming a bit sunnier. . lloydandleslie@... wrote: , That is something we are considering.
