Guest guest
I don't have to many thoughts regarding the lab results, but if her cholesterol levels become to high then try adding come B complex or adding more if she already gets some. high cholestoral Does anyone out there pay close attention to the lab results? I always get Stella's emailed to me by her dietician, and I'm noticing a huge increase in triglycerides and cholestoral levels. I know this will be high because of all the fat she consumes, but just how high? Her tri levels are 427 and her chol is 259. Her vit A is low too. Any thoughts are appreciated. amanda

Guest guest
Were they fasting levels ? V important that they are, otherwise the results will be skewed from the most recent keto meal she would have eaten, esp the triglycerides. 's last results 2 mths ago were... Triglyceride .8 (ref range < 2.0) - when this was tested the week before in a non fasting state, (we hadn't realised lipids were being included and he had eaten a keto meal 90 mins prior) it was 5.3, which just about gave ME a heart attack.... we repeated them in a fasting state, and saw his level was actually really quite low. Total cholesterol 6.7 (ref range < 5.0) HDL cholesterol 1.8 (ref range > 1.0) LDL cholesterol 4.5 (ref range < 3.0) So his 'bad' cholesterol, LDL is raised, but his 'good' cholesterol, HDL is at an ok level, so his overall total/HDL ratio was fine at 3.7 (ref range < 4.5). The dietician was therefore quite happy with these results. Have Stella's results been broken down like that? A good site for explanations on the lipid panel results is http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=180 ----- Original Message ----- From: and Stansfield-lyons Does anyone out there pay close attention to the lab results? Guest guest
, could you send me the glucose literature you have, I was just on the matthews friends site and saw you had some info on that. We are still tweaking stella's diet and with all seizures she has, I have to start somewhere. We are heading down to Portland OR for thanksgiving so a little reading material would be great for the drive. Great tip too, giving the benzo seperate from the keto meal, we always give her meds at the same time so they don't cause any tummy upset. thanks amanda -- -mom to Stella, 5years old, started keto diet May 10th 2004 still waiting to be seizure free. Also on Lamictal, epam and Diamox. Anisa is almost 10 and a happy healthy girl.

Guest guest
I typed a response like this and coudn't get it to send. Less cream, butter, mayo and processed meats, more oils. I kept 's meals to a maximum of 40 g of cream and most were 25-30 g cream. Also flax oil has been shown to lower cholesterol independant of the diet so if your child can handle it, its a good choice. Just make sure you start with low amounts and increase slowly. For 6.5 yrs on the diet always had normal cholesterol. But neuro said its as much genetics as diet, which makes you wonder about all the diet stuff you here. Also tegretol can raise cholesterol, so with diet its a double whammy , 's mom Barbara Swoyer wrote: > I also lowered my son's cholesterol by using less butter and more oils > > high cholestoral > > > > > > > > Does anyone out there pay close attention to the lab results? Guest guest
Yes, that is a common side effect of the diet. All that fat does increase cholesterol. If possible, you can try to use " better " fats and oils. We use BECEL margarine and a little bit of cream. We stay away from animal fat. We use safflower or canola oil. We use salmon which has some fat in it. Your child should not be gaining weight on the diet. We also were on tegretol for a time and I was told that that med can increase cholesterol. We are weaning now and cholesterol is back to normal. We just added 50 calories per day to the diet and are holding breath to see how we manage that. Soon we will be off the diet. Basically 2 years on the diet and 2 years weaning. So far, so good. Seizures every day, but only short and carries on normally with no meds. Guest guest
It's funny, stella is on a vegie version of the diet, no meat etc. mostly 80% of her fat comes from flax the other mostly olive oil. Occasionally she'll have cream, go figure!!! -- -mom to Stella, 5years old, started keto diet May 10th 2004 still waiting to be seizure free. Also on Lamictal, epam and Diamox. Guest guest
Same - gets no more than about 25-30 g cream per meal, (he is on 1550 cals, 3.3:1 ratio) the odd day he might have one meal with 50-60 if I use a hot choc/milkshake mix. Not sure if this is why his trygliceride level and overall chol ratio has kept in an ok range or not, but I try to stick to it just in case. The fat part is fairly easy here because he is fine with taking oils from a syringe, which certainly helps at meal times. ----- Original Message ----- From: mmc@...
