Guest guest
We're wrestling with this right now as well. Our son would only go every 3 or 4 days, often with the help of MOM. When he did finally go, it would be very runny. So, being new to this game, we didn't know which extreme he was at (constipation or diarrhea). Finally, we got an x-ray done and sure enough he was very constipated, and the runny stuff was basically just coming around the hard stuff. Many glycerin suppositories, an enema, and a couple of days of Miralax haven't been able to clear him out yet. We are keeping in constant contact with the pediatrician and dietician, and I guess if something doesn't happen soon then we'll have to get the GI doc involved. I'm sure you know that constipation is a common side effect of the diet, especially at the beginning. We're obviously working on adding more fiber into his meals (probably taking Bill's advice and using psyllium husks?), and increasing his magnesium. The plan is to basically double his daily mag supplement and expect some diarrhea, then slowly back off on the mag. until things seem about right. I think it's just a learning process to see what works for your kid. - > > Hi my son Caden, has been on the diet for amonth the strangest thing > withh his bowel movments, for three days he had dirreha and now he,s > constipated, had to give him some MOM today, hope it works it has > been the fourth day, no B.M. has anybody else had aproblem with > this.Cade is not taking carnator and he is on Depakote could this be > aproblem, his seizures have reduced some but not much , was praying > to see a better reduction hopefully futher into the diet they wiil > get better, and getting this diet fine tuned. Guest guest
This is the exact problem we had. No one believed Langan was constipated b/c she was having watery BMs. Lots of screaming (by her), two ER trips and an xray later they discovered that she was extremely constipated and the watery stuff was all she could " squeeze out " past the impaction. Sorry to be so graphic but there's no other way to describe it. We started with unlimited fluids and used the Cal-Mag-Zinc 3 supplement and didn't have any more problems, but first we had a week of enemas to clear her out. Ugh! , mom to Langan, 2 yrs old and keto kid 11/03 through 9/7/04, weaned due to persistent severe metabolic acidosis but keto kid at heart forever > > > > Hi my son Caden, has been on the diet for amonth the strangest > thing > > withh his bowel movments, for three days he had dirreha and now > he,s > > constipated, had to give him some MOM today, hope it works it has > > been the fourth day, no B.M. has anybody else had aproblem with > > this.Cade is not taking carnator and he is on Depakote could this > be > > aproblem, his seizures have reduced some but not much , was praying > > to see a better reduction hopefully futher into the diet they > wiil > > get better, and getting this diet fine tuned. Guest guest
3 or 4 days better bowel movements is not uncommon on the diet. So is constipation. The MOM is a good idea. Keep on top of it as constipation can be a serious medical condition if you have blockage. It can also result in seizures because it interferes with the diet and increases stress. If it is bad you will see pain and vomiting and lack of appetite. Increase fluids if you are able. Guest guest
Earlier in Oct was in the hospital for 5 days until a grand mal squeezed out a huge one. Funny thing! The 10+ seizures per day stopped and he was happy again. Constipation is common and can be deadly. Not to scare anyone. But there is a vagal nerve in the rectum. In older people is has been deadly to them when they are pushing. Supposedly the pushing on the vagul nerve acn cause fainting or heart attacks. We have been in the hospital too much lately and heard many old people/vagul nerve stories. The moral of the story is to keep a close eye on the situation and take it very serious. Guest guest
Hi Viola, I use to give Kristan MOM everyday and needed to make sure she also drank her water for her to have a BM. We also have her on MCT oil which helps. She started Carnitor a few months ago and since we started that, it helps with her BM and I have stopped using the MOM. Hope this helps.
