Guest guest
The grapefuit/med thing is something that first came up here when my youngest was a on reflux med as a baby, prepulsid I think it was, carried the warning not to be used with grapefruit or any of it's extracts...but I never really knew why. Then one pill container for s (back then regular) oral diazepam (so yes, one of the benzodiazepine meds like klonipin) appeared with the same warning - first time out of countless script refills that the warning was ever printed on the label, and during 3 yrs of benzo use not once did our hosp tell us of the potential interaction - grrrr. When we used the liquid stevia (2 yrs ago now) that contained grapefruit seed extract as a preservative, I didn't click until he had a breakthrough drop attack as his diaz peaked that day - that's when I made the connection and rang the local pharmacist here, who said the clearance of meds like diazepam are thru the same pathways as grapefruit, which leads to a build up of the med. I still find it kind of hard to believe that the teeny amount of stevia we used caused him to be so suceptible to toxicity, but we didn't use it again, and didn't see another seizure, until the next breakthrough drop attack came a few weeks later when we tried the powdered form, er, with maltodextrin in.... So it was 3rd time lucky here when we finally found a pure form. ----- Original Message ----- From: gretchen_kissock HI, I didn't realize liquid Stevia has grapefruit extract in it. Ask about grapefruit and meds, I think she knows all about it. I might be wrong, but I don't think it interacts with lamictal. I don't know about zonagran. I think it interferes with klonipin. But, like I said, I might have the meds mixed up. > Hi Gretchen, > While we are on the subject.... Do you know if Lamictal or Zonegran are one of them?? > We've never been told Adrielle couldn't have grapefruit, so I'm > guessing no, but I'd like to be sure!
