Guest guest
Lupus patients are very prone to mouth lesions. These open sores can occur in the mouth on the inside of the cheeks, the tongue, the gums, and the lips. It is imperative to determine what type of lesion it is. Is it a cold sore caused by the herpes simplex virus? Is the beginning of an infection? Is it the beginning of thrush, a yeast infection that centers in the mouth? Or are they lupus lesions? A visit to the doctor or dentist can help you find the correct treatment for your lesions. There are several products on the market that can help. Colgate makes a product called Orabase Soothe and Seal as well as one with Benzocaine. Both products will numb the area; while the Soothe and Seal puts a light covering of medication over the area. Blistex will work on lesions that occur on the lips or gum line. ViraMedx® is an over-the-counter topical formulation of Viracea targeting the herpes virus which causes the cold sores. There are several sore throat sprays that work by numbing the throat, you can also spray some of the liquid on a Q-tip then apply it directly to the lesion. Covering the open lesion so air cannot contact will lessen the pain. Gels that leave a coating on the surface inside the mouth will help with this. If not, a dab of plain old petroleum jelly (Vaseline) will help cover the lesion and lessen the pain.
